INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1977 as the Senior Care Action Network, SCAN began with a simple but radical idea: that older adults deserve to stay healthy and independent. That belief was championed by a group of community activists we still honor today as the “12 Angry Seniors.” Their mission continues to guide everything we do.
Today, SCAN is a nonprofit health organization serving more than 500,000 people across Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington, with over $8 billion in annual revenue. With nearly five decades of experience, we have built a distinctive, values-driven platform dedicated to improving care for older adults.
Our work spans Medicare Advantage, fully integrated care models, primary care, care for the most medically and socially complex populations, and next-generation care delivery models. Across all of this, we are united by a shared commitment: combining compassion with discipline, innovation with stewardship, and growth with integrity.
At SCAN, we believe scale should strengthen—not dilute—our mission. We are building the future of care for older adults, grounded in purpose, accountability, and respect for the people and communities we serve.

Tips for Your Behavioral Health Manager Job Search
Quantify your clinical supervision numbers
Hiring managers want to see how many clinicians you supervised and the size of the caseloads your team carried. Replace vague phrases like 'led a team' with specifics about staff count, session volume, and outcomes you can attribute to your oversight.
List your licensure and required credentials first
Behavioral health manager postings almost always require an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or equivalent licensure as a hard filter. Put your license type, state, and expiration year in a dedicated credentials line near the top of your resume so screeners find it instantly.
Target openings by funding source and population
Medicaid-funded community mental health centers, VA-affiliated programs, and private managed care organizations each operate very differently. Search for roles by the population you know best, whether that is adults with severe mental illness, youth, or co-occurring disorders, to match your experience to the employer's actual needs.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists behavioral health manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare concrete compliance and QA examples
Interview panels at behavioral health organizations routinely ask about CARF or Joint Commission accreditation experience, Medicaid billing compliance, and quality assurance processes. Have a specific story ready for each, naming the standard, the gap you identified, and the measurable result your fix produced.
Negotiate beyond base pay at offer stage
Behavioral health manager offers at nonprofits and community health centers often have limited base salary flexibility but more room on continuing education stipends, licensure reimbursement, student loan repayment programs, and additional supervision hours toward advanced licensure. Ask about each line item separately rather than negotiating a single number.
Behavioral Health Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most behavioral health managers?
The companies hiring the most behavioral health managers right now include The People Concern, Dallas Independent School District, and Eliot Community Human Services, with the largest share of openings in California, Massachusetts, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strong at community mental health centers, integrated health systems, and managed behavioral health organizations.
How many behavioral health manager jobs are remote?
About 11% of behavioral health manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote options most concentrated in utilization review, care management, and telehealth program oversight roles. Positions that require direct supervision of in-person clinical staff or facility-based program oversight are far more likely to require on-site presence.
How do you become a behavioral health manager?
Most behavioral health managers start by earning a master's degree in social work, counseling, or a related clinical field, then obtaining full independent clinical licensure in their state. From there, building several years of direct clinical experience is essential before moving into a supervisory role. Many candidates take on lead clinician or clinical supervisor positions first to develop the program oversight, compliance, and staff management skills that manager-level roles require.
Can you get hired as a behavioral health manager with little management experience?
Yes, especially if you can demonstrate informal leadership in your clinical career. Employers hiring candidates with limited direct management experience typically look for evidence of clinical supervision, committee participation, quality improvement projects, or mentoring newer staff. Framing those contributions clearly on your resume and in interviews can close the gap, particularly at smaller community programs that promote internally and value strong clinical credibility over formal management titles.
What does the behavioral health manager interview process look like?
Most interview processes include an initial phone screen with HR or a recruiter, followed by a panel interview with clinical leadership and often a program director or executive. Candidates are typically asked behavioral and situational questions covering staff supervision, compliance challenges, and crisis management scenarios. Some organizations add a practical component such as reviewing a sample case or presenting a quality improvement proposal before a final offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health manager jobs?
You can find and apply to behavioral health manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your licensure, experience level, and preferred setting, and apply directly to each listing.
