Certified Medical Assistant Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified medical assistant in Iowa?
Iowa does not require a state-issued license for medical assistants, so the path to employment centers on earning a nationally recognized certification such as the CMA from the American Association of Medical Assistants or the RMA from American Medical Technologists. Most Iowa employers require graduation from an accredited medical assisting program, typically a diploma or associate degree. Completing a practicum or externship at an Iowa clinic strengthens your application considerably.
Which companies hire certified medical assistants in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring certified medical assistants in Iowa include UnityPoint Health, MercyOne, and Exemplar Care, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's large integrated health systems, including academic medical centers affiliated with the University of Iowa, generate particularly steady demand for certified candidates across both urban and rural clinic locations.
Which Iowa cities have the most certified medical assistant jobs?
Waterloo, Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids consistently post the most certified medical assistant openings in Iowa. Des Moines anchors the market as the state's largest metro, home to major health system headquarters and a growing network of specialty and urgent care clinics, while Cedar Rapids and Iowa City benefit from large academic and regional medical centers that sustain hiring year-round.
Are there remote certified medical assistant jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of certified medical assistant openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on clinical nature of most positions in the field. The remote roles that do exist tend to involve medical records review, prior authorization support, or telehealth triage assistance rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a certified medical assistant in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited medical assisting program that includes a clinical externship at an Iowa facility, since many employers convert strong externs directly into hires. UnityPoint Health and MercyOne run new-graduate onboarding tracks at their clinic networks, and candidates coming from adjacent roles such as patient access representative or medical receptionist have a natural advantage. Earning your CMA or RMA before applying, even without paid experience, signals readiness to Iowa hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to certified medical assistant jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to certified medical assistant jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, preferred city, and clinical setting, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
