Certified Medical Assistant Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified medical assistant in New Jersey?
New Jersey does not require a state-issued license for medical assistants, so the path runs through national certification. Most employers require a CMA credential from the American Association of Medical Assistants, an RMA from American Medical Technologists, or a CCMA from the National Healthcareer Association. Candidates complete an accredited medical assistant program at a New Jersey community college or vocational school, then pass the relevant national exam to earn the credential employers expect.
Which companies hire certified medical assistants in New Jersey?
Companies currently hiring certified medical assistants in New Jersey include Hackensack Meridian Health, Atlantic Health, and RWJBarnabas Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Large integrated health systems across the state, including RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health, tend to post the most consistent volume across their outpatient and specialty clinic networks.
Which New Jersey cities have the most certified medical assistant jobs?
Hackensack, Morristown, and Paramus have the most certified medical assistant openings in New Jersey. Newark and its surrounding Essex County communities drive high volume through dense concentrations of hospital-affiliated outpatient practices and federally qualified health centers, while Edison and the broader Central Jersey corridor reflect the region's large suburban physician group and urgent care market.
Are there remote certified medical assistant jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. Certified medical assistant work is fundamentally hands-on, involving patient intake, phlebotomy, and clinical procedures that require an in-person setting. About 3% of certified medical assistant openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those openings are almost exclusively in administrative or telehealth support functions rather than direct clinical care.
How can I get hired as a certified medical assistant in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to externship-to-hire programs offered through accredited New Jersey programs at schools such as Essex County College or Mercer County Community College, which place graduates directly with affiliated clinic partners. Large systems including RWJBarnabas Health and Atlantic Health System hire entry-level candidates into high-volume primary care and urgent care sites where on-the-job training is structured. Candidates moving laterally from patient service representative or medical receptionist roles also enter this career path regularly, and holding even one national certification gives a strong edge over uncredentialed applicants.
Where can I find and apply to certified medical assistant jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to certified medical assistant jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find a role that fits your background and preferred location, and apply directly.
