MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages daily intra-operative processes to optimize patient outcomes, customer satisfaction, and resource management
- Assures appropriate peri-operative communication between clinical areas
- Supervises and implements the daily surgical schedule
- Collaborates with surgical schedulers on availability of OR scheduling times and works with physicians and/or physicians' offices to assure that cases are scheduled
- Works with Anesthesia Coordinator to facilitate movement of patients to implement OR/ASC schedule
- Collaborates with Anesthesia Coordinator to provide placement of add-on cases to the existing schedule, assign appropriate staff to meet the clinical competence of the case
- Participates in meeting all applicable regulatory agency requirements
- Assists with vendor and visitor control
- Minimizes turnaround of OR rooms through effective communication and supervision
- Collaborates with physicians and staff to maintain efficient utilization of surgical time
- Resolves interdisciplinary conflicts in a productive manner
- Communicates with physicians, staff, peers, and Manager collaboratively and respectfully
- Coordinates emergency activities (ex. Codes, Power Outage, etc.)
- Accountable for appropriate resource utilization and intradepartmental collaboration
- Reviews and makes adjustments to staff assignments daily, utilizing appropriate level and numbers of caregivers in an effective manner
- Participates with Surgical Specialists, ACM, and Managers in identifying opportunities for standardization and cost effect utilization of supplies/equipment
- Demonstrates competence in all aspects of patient care
- Provides report of all patients to oncoming Charge Nurse, remain aware of patient acuity, patient assignments, unit activity, and unstable patients
- Demonstrates the ability to provide assistance in critical situations
- Collaborates with Clinical Practice Manager to assign preceptors for new team members and students
- Coordinates Disaster Plan specific to unit
- Uses prudent judgment in making patient assignments, ensuring appropriate patient load as deemed necessary for safe staffing
- Provides supervision to promote quality patient care, the Key Result Areas, and the Advocate Experience
- Reports significant events such as near misses, adverse events, patient/family complaints, and other occurrences that affects the safe delivery of patient care in a timely manner
- Performs the principle duties and responsibilities of the RN position and serves as a role model for professional practice
- Assigns and delegates patient care activities and tasks to all team members of the intraoperative surgical team
- Supports quality improvement monitoring by: auditing crash cart, resolve pyxis discrepancies at end of each shift, audit pyxis on the first Monday of each month, audit glucose monitor controls are completed
- Ensures compliance with infection control procedures
- Prioritizes and manages patient delays in a timely manner
- In collaboration with the Clinical Manager of Practice identifies educational needs of nursing staff and implement formal education geared toward enhancing nursing knowledge and the advancement of nursing practice
- Provides direct patient care as a staff RN as needed; keeping up with clinical competencies with all service lines
- Ensures hourly rounds are performed on all patients and staff and sure daily checklist completed and follow through on pending issues
- Responsible for first line Service Recovery of patient, family, and physician complaints and effective communication of unresolved issues to Clinical Managers
- Responsible for development, motivation, and evaluation of assigned team members
- Participates in competency assessment
- Monitors and evaluates orientees and provides feedback to Leadership Team
- Serves as clinical resource and coach/mentor for staff
- Collaborates with Surgical Specialists to assure physician privileges are in adherence
- Responsible for communicating performance or behavioral feedback that does not meet performance expectations for the Behaviors of Excellence to the unit manager
- Responsible for addressing behaviors and performance concerns in real time with verbal coaching and redirection of the team
- Ensures compliance with infection control procedure
- Performs the principle duties and responsibilities of the RN position and serves as a role model for professional practice
- Consistently demonstrates positive daily BOEs
- Maintains unit and hospital-based competencies
- Demonstrates appropriate psychosocial intervention based on age and developmental status
- Evaluates environmental safety and provides care and a safe environment, based on age and developmental status
- Facilitates efficient turnover through active participation in addressing tasks needed to ready the room for next case
- Accepts responsibility for self development and professional practice
- Participates and/or leads unit/hospital activities (i.e. inservice attendance, UPC, and Quality teams)
- Incorporates information and skills acquired in learning activities to improve patient care
- Complies with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory agency standards
- Maintains confidentiality and respects team members' and patients' right to privacy
- Recruits staff to work when needed
- Records call-ins and refers staff member to Clinical Managers
- Assigns breaks and meal periods to team members
- Facilitates coverage for staff to attend meetings/educational programs during shift
- Low-census/flex staff according to policy and record appropriately
- Demonstrates unbiased and fairness to all team members with regards to daily operations
LICENSURE: Nurse, Registered (RN)
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- BSN preferred, ADN with agreement to enroll in BSN completion program in two years to be completed in five years
- Two years Intra-operative/ Peri-operative experience
- Bachelors degree
- Experience as a charge nurse (one year)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Strong clinical skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cohesively with a diverse work group
- Utilization of critical thinking in timely decision making
- Current RN licensure in Illinois
- CNOR preferred
- Demonstrated leadership experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to work within a rapid changing environment
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal/external customers
- May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to patient-focused care
- Ability to prioritize independently and respond to multiple simultaneous requests
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations
- Ability to perform lifting/transfer activities related to patients (up to 50 lbs. may be required)
- Ability to work designated shifts, including weekends and holidays
- Ability to transport objects from one location to another
- This position needs to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated
If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
