Communications Director Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a communications director in Illinois?
Most communications directors in Illinois follow a path that begins with a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field, often followed by years in roles such as communications manager, public affairs officer, or senior writer. Illinois does not require a state-issued license or certification for this role. Candidates who advance fastest typically build a strong portfolio of campaign work, crisis response experience, and demonstrated leadership managing communications teams within Illinois's corporate, nonprofit, or government sectors.
Which companies hire communications directors in Illinois?
Employers hiring communications directors in Illinois right now include The University of Chicago, University of Illinois, and JLL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major hospital systems, and large public universities means demand is spread across industries rather than tied to a single sector.
Which Illinois cities have the most communications director jobs?
Chicago, Peoria, and Urbana have the most communications director openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it anchors the state's corporate headquarters, major media organizations, and large nonprofits, while Springfield generates openings through state government agencies and advocacy groups, and smaller cities like Evanston and Naperville see demand from universities and regional corporate campuses.
Are there remote communications director jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many leadership roles, since communications work is largely desk-based and deliverable-driven. About 70% of communications director openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, reflecting ongoing flexibility across corporate and nonprofit employers. Strategic planning, executive writing, and media monitoring are the functions most commonly performed fully remotely, while spokesperson duties and team management roles tend to require at least a partial on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a communications director in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to build toward the role from a coordinator or specialist position in communications, public affairs, or marketing at a large Illinois organization. Major Illinois employers including Northwestern Medicine, the City of Chicago, and large state agencies regularly post communications associate and public information officer roles that serve as direct pipelines. Building a portfolio of writing samples, press releases, and campaign results, and earning credentials such as the Accreditation in Public Relations through the Public Relations Society of America, meaningfully strengthens candidacy for a director-level title.
