COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST
The Watertown Unified School District (WUSD) has an excellent opportunity for an experienced communications professional to serve as Communication Specialist. As part of the WUSD service-focused administration, the selected candidate will help to further the WUSD mission to serve the WUSD community by providing educational opportunities to promote academic excellence and a lifelong love of learning and to lead the community, families, students and staff in realizing the WUSD vision of inspired learners through student-centered education strengthened by community involvement.

ASSIGNMENT: Full-time, Year-round

The WUSD is seeking a strategic communicator, authentic storyteller, and community connector to serve as Communication Specialist. This is more than a public relations or marketing role — it is an opportunity to shape the way the WUSD community experiences its schools.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate’s background will include:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience managing organizational social media accounts and developing content strategies.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to adapt voice and tone for varied audiences.
- Proficiency with digital design tools such as Canva; ability to produce professional-quality visual content.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine ability to build trust with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in a K–12 school district, government, or nonprofit communications environment.
- Experience with school communication platforms such as Thrillshare, Skylert, Smore, or Rooms.
- Experience with website content management systems and digital accessibility standards.
- Familiarity with Canva or similar professional design software.
- Bilingual communication skills are a plus.
Responsibilities
The Communication Specialist will be the primary steward of how WUSD tells its story: celebrating student achievement and staff excellence, building trust with families, and strengthening the district’s presence across digital and print platforms. This person will bring creativity, systems thinking, and a genuine passion for public education to a role that directly supports the district’s priority areas of Inspired Academic Excellence, All in Team, and Connecting as Community.
Working closely with the Superintendent, building principals, and staff across all schools, the Communication Specialist will develop and implement a comprehensive, audience-centered communication plan — building the systems, tools, and relationships that allow WUSD to communicate consistently, proactively, and with purpose. Responsibilities include storytelling and content development, innovative digital and brand leadership and execution, collaborative relationship building across a continuum of stakeholders and creating processes, guidelines and procedures for WUSD communication paths.

The Watertown School District has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students taught in seven buildings.
THE COMMUNITY: The Watertown community has 24,000 residents and is located on the Rock River approximately halfway between Madison and Milwaukee, at the junction of Highways 16, 19, and 26.
