INTRODUCTION
We’re not just building better tech. We’re rewriting how data moves and what the world can do with it. With Confluent, data doesn’t sit still. Our platform puts information in motion, streaming in near real-time so companies can react faster, build smarter, and deliver experiences as dynamic as the world around them.
It takes a certain kind of person to join this team. Those who ask hard questions, give honest feedback, and show up for each other. No egos, no solo acts. Just smart, curious humans pushing toward something bigger, together.
One Confluent. One Team. One Data Streaming Platform.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a Senior Software Engineer II at Confluent, you will take ownership of critical backend systems in Stream Governance products that underpin our data streaming platform. You’ll lead the design and delivery of large-scale, distributed services that must be secure, highly available, and easy to operate across regions and clouds.
The Stream Governance product portfolio is crucial to achieving Confluent’s mission to put event streaming at the heart of every organization. Our mission is to provide a robust, cloud-native platform that ensures data quality and integrity by standardizing structure and enforcing intelligent rules across every stream. You will be responsible for delivering critical functionalities like Confluent Schema Registry, Data Contracts, and Policies.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with the team and key stakeholders to design, architect, and develop cloud-native, multi-tenant services for Stream Governance. You will be responsible for guiding the vision, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and enabling a high-performing engineering team to tackle complex distributed data challenges at scale.
You’ll act as a technical leader: setting direction for projects, making architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to ship high-impact work.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Develop and architect the cloud-native Stream Governance platform - a multi-tenant, highly available, and scalable service for Kafka and real-time data.
- Own and lead the end-to-end design and implementation of complex backend services within a cloud-native, microservices-based environment.
- Drive projects from requirements and design through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation in production.
- Make architecture and technical decisions that thoughtfully balance reliability, scalability, performance, and operability.
- Solve complicated technical projects with high quality, provide specialized technical guidance to the team, and mentor/support other engineers through code reviews and design reviews.
- Evaluate and enhance the efficiency of our platform's technology stack, ensuring we keep pace with industry trends and adopt state-of-the-art solutions.
- Take responsibility for developing, managing, and maintaining a mission-critical service with a 99.99 SLA running across 100+ AWS, GCP, and Azure regions.
- Partner across engineering and with other key stakeholders to create and execute the overall roadmap for delivering a top-notch Data Streaming Platform.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, inclusive collaboration, and high technical standards.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
- 5+ years of industry experience designing, building, scaling, and operating backend systems in production.
- Deep proficiency in at least one major backend programming language (e.g., Java, Go, C/C++, or Python) and strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems, such as event-driven architectures, high-throughput services, or large-scale data pipelines. A strong understanding of consistency, fault tolerance, and performance tradeoffs.
- Strong experience running production services in a public cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including containerized workloads (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Expertise in cloud-native technology, including networking & security, and experience being part of an oncall rotation.
- Proven experience in leading and mentoring technical teams.
- A track record of technical leadership: driving projects, influencing architecture, and coordinating work across multiple engineers or teams.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align stakeholders, explain complex ideas clearly, and drive decisions.
- BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
WHAT GIVES YOU AN EDGE:
- Experience building or operating mission-critical, multi-tenant, or multi-region services with strict availability and latency requirements.

Align your credentials to Confluent's stack
Confluent's Cloud Engineer roles center on Kafka, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure across AWS, GCP, and Azure. Certifications in these platforms signal direct job readiness and strengthen the specialty occupation case your employer will need to make to USCIS.
Target roles that match your visa category
Confluent sponsors H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT, so the role you apply for shapes which pathway opens first. Senior or staff-level Cloud Engineer postings often align better with H-1B specialty occupation standards than associate-level titles, which matters when USCIS reviews the petition.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Cloud Engineer roles at Confluent
Sponsorship-friendly roles at Confluent aren't always labeled clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to surface and track Confluent's Cloud Engineer openings filtered by visa type so you're applying to positions the company is actively staffing with sponsored candidates.
Secure your LCA before the offer deadline passes
Once Confluent extends an offer, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting the H-1B petition to USCIS. LCA certification typically takes seven business days, so flag this timeline with your recruiter early to avoid delays between offer and filing.
Document experience with distributed systems thoroughly
USCIS scrutinizes whether a Cloud Engineer role requires a specific bachelor's degree field. Build a paper trail showing your work with event-driven architecture, stream processing, or cloud orchestration tools. This directly supports the specialty occupation argument your employer makes during the petition.
Clarify OPT start dates with Confluent's HR team
If you're on F-1 OPT, your employment start date must fall within your authorized work period. Confluent's hiring cycles for Cloud Engineers can run six to ten weeks. Confirm your OPT expiration date with HR before your final interview round so there's no gap between offer and authorization.

Find Cloud Engineer at Confluent JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Confluent sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Engineers?
Yes, Confluent sponsors H-1B visas for Cloud Engineer roles. The company files petitions through the annual USCIS lottery, which opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're already on H-1B with another employer, Confluent can file an H-1B transfer, which lets you start work as soon as USCIS receives the petition, without waiting for approval.
Which visa types does Confluent commonly use for Cloud Engineer roles?
Confluent sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, TN, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Cloud Engineers. F-1 OPT is typically the entry point for recent graduates, with H-1B sponsorship following during OPT or STEM OPT. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. Green Card sponsorship generally begins after you've established yourself in the role.
How do I apply for Cloud Engineer jobs at Confluent?
You can browse and apply for Cloud Engineer positions at Confluent through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Confluent's Cloud Engineer hiring process typically includes a recruiter screen, a systems design round focused on distributed infrastructure, and a technical deep dive on Kafka or Kubernetes. Preparing for stream processing architecture questions will serve you well.
What qualifications does Confluent expect for sponsored Cloud Engineer roles?
Confluent's Cloud Engineer roles generally require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related field, which is also what USCIS uses to assess specialty occupation status. Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka, container orchestration, and at least one major cloud provider is expected. Staff and senior-level roles add requirements around reliability engineering, multi-region infrastructure design, and cross-functional technical leadership.
How do I plan my timeline if I'm applying to Confluent on F-1 OPT?
If your OPT authorization covers the role's start date, Confluent can begin the H-1B process during your STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three additional years to go through the lottery. USCIS registration opens in March, and the cap-subject lottery selects registrations before April 1. Start your application process at least three months before your OPT expires to leave room for hiring cycles and filing preparation.
