General Description
Under the direction of the Administrator Over CTE, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Automotive Teacher is responsible for providing classroom and laboratory instruction in automotive technology and related career pathways. The teacher will prepare students with the technical knowledge, workplace readiness skills, and industry competencies necessary for postsecondary education, certification, and employment in the automotive industry.
The Automotive Teacher will develop and maintain a safe, engaging, and industry-aligned learning environment that supports student achievement, hands-on instruction, and career readiness. The teacher will also work collaboratively with school staff, business partners, parents, and community stakeholders to promote and strengthen the automotive program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver instruction aligned with Virginia Career and Technical Education standards and industry expectations.
- Provide classroom and hands-on laboratory instruction in automotive systems, maintenance, diagnostics, repair, safety procedures, and related automotive technologies.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, assessments, and laboratory activities that support student learning and industry readiness.
- Maintain a safe and organized automotive laboratory environment in compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.
- Instruct students in the proper use of tools, equipment, machinery, and automotive technology systems.
- Integrate employability skills, workplace readiness skills, and career exploration into daily instruction.
- Prepare students for industry-recognized certifications and credentialing opportunities.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress and maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, certifications, and competencies.
- Utilize instructional technology and automotive diagnostic technology to enhance student learning.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community/business partners.
- Participate in professional development activities, faculty meetings, and division training as required.
- Maintain inventory, equipment records, and instructional supplies associated with the automotive program.
- Assist with student recruitment, career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities, and work-based learning opportunities.
- Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and CTE staff to support student success and career planning.
- Follow all division policies, procedures, and expectations related to instruction, student supervision, and professional conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Qualifications
- Eligible for or possession of a Virginia teaching license with appropriate Career and Technical Education endorsement in Automotive Technology or a related field.
- Industry experience in automotive technology, repair, diagnostics, or related automotive services required.
- ASE certification(s) preferred.
- Experience working with high school students preferred.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the division may find appropriate and acceptable.
Salary
Salary will be based on the approved teacher salary scale and may consider relevant industry experience in accordance with division guidelines.
Physical Requirements
Work requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time; bend, stoop, kneel, lift, and move automotive tools, parts, and equipment; and safely operate automotive equipment and machinery. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. The position requires the ability to work in both classroom and automotive laboratory settings.
