Align your credentials to biotech engineering standards
Genentech's engineering roles typically require degrees in chemical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering with coursework or experience in GMP environments. Make sure your transcripts and any foreign credentials reflect that alignment before applying.
Target process and manufacturing engineering openings
Genentech's largest engineering headcount sits in process development and biologics manufacturing. These teams hire internationally with regularity, so prioritize roles in those functions over general engineering postings when scanning open positions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Genentech engineering roles by visa type
Genentech posts engineering positions across multiple sites. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles flagged for visa sponsorship so you're not applying to headcount that won't support an international hire.
Clarify sponsorship scope early in recruiter conversations
Genentech sponsors H-1B transfers as well as new H-1B cap-subject filings, but not every engineering role has budget pre-approved. Ask the recruiter directly whether the specific role is approved for sponsorship before investing time in the interview loop.
File your LCA paperwork before your start date window closes
The DOL requires a certified Labor Condition Application before USCIS will accept your H-1B petition. Genentech's HR teams are experienced with this, but confirm the LCA is filed with enough lead time so a delay doesn't push your start date past your OPT or grace period expiry.
Position your PERM timeline around promotion cycles
If you're targeting a Green Card through the EB-2 or EB-3 route, Genentech typically initiates PERM after an engineer establishes a performance record. PERM recruitment can take six months or more before DOL certification, so align your internal conversations with your annual review cycle.

Does Genentech sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Genentech sponsors H-1B visas for engineering roles, including both cap-subject petitions and transfers from existing H-1B holders. Sponsorship is most consistent for process, manufacturing, and automation engineering positions. Availability depends on the specific role and business unit, so confirm sponsorship support with your recruiter before advancing in the interview process.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Genentech?
Applications go through Genentech's careers portal on the Roche Group website. You can also find Genentech engineering roles with visa sponsorship flagged on Migrate Mate, which filters for positions that support international candidates. Tailor your application to highlight experience in regulated biotech or pharmaceutical environments, as Genentech prioritizes candidates with GMP or cGMP exposure for most engineering functions.
Which visa types does Genentech commonly use for Engineering roles?
Genentech sponsors H-1B visas most frequently for engineering hires. F-1 OPT and CPT are used to bring on students and recent graduates, including those on STEM OPT extensions, which provide up to 36 months of work authorization. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering occupations. For long-term permanent residence, Genentech supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways.
What qualifications does Genentech expect for sponsored Engineering positions?
Most engineering roles require a bachelor's degree at minimum in a directly related discipline such as chemical, mechanical, biomedical, or electrical engineering. Senior and specialist roles frequently prefer a master's degree or demonstrated GMP manufacturing experience. Familiarity with FDA-regulated environments, process validation, or automation systems is a strong differentiator for candidates targeting Genentech's biologics manufacturing and process development teams.
How do I plan my timeline when applying for an engineering role at Genentech on a visa?
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm how much time remains on your authorization before starting the interview process, since H-1B cap filings must be submitted in April for an October 1 start. For H-1B transfers, Genentech can file any time of year, and you can begin work as soon as USCIS receives the petition. Build at least three to four months of runway between your offer acceptance and any expiring status to account for LCA certification and USCIS processing.
