Frame your background around biopharma deal structures
Genentech's BD team focuses on licensing, co-promotion, and acquisition transactions in biotech and diagnostics. Candidates who can speak to specific deal types, therapeutic areas, or due diligence experience get further faster than those with generic business development backgrounds.
Confirm your visa category before applying
Genentech sponsors H-1B, TN, and OPT for this function, but each has different lead times. If your OPT is expiring within six months of a target start date, flag that early in conversations so the hiring team can align the offer timeline with your authorization window.
Search open roles through Migrate Mate
Genentech's Strategic Business Development openings are filterable by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, so you can identify which roles explicitly support your category before investing time in a full application and cover letter.
Understand how PERM affects your long-term planning
If you're targeting a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, Genentech's PERM process typically begins after you've established yourself in the role. Starting that conversation with HR during the offer stage, not after onboarding, gives you a clearer timeline and avoids gaps in your status.
Align your specialty occupation case to the role
USCIS requires that H-1B roles qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. For Strategic Business Development, your petition is stronger when the job description explicitly ties degree requirements to life sciences, finance, or a related technical discipline.
Target roles in Genentech's therapeutic partnership teams
BD openings tied to oncology, rare disease, or diagnostic collaborations tend to appear more consistently and involve longer-term headcount planning, which generally translates to more runway for visa processing and stronger employer motivation to complete sponsorship filings.

Find Strategic Business Development at Genentech JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Genentech sponsor H-1B visas for Strategic Business Developments?
Yes, Genentech sponsors H-1B visas for Strategic Business Development roles. The position typically qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards because it requires a degree in life sciences, finance, business, or a related technical field. If you're already on H-1B with another employer, Genentech can file an H-1B transfer, letting you start work as soon as the transfer petition is received by USCIS.
How do I apply for Strategic Business Development jobs at Genentech?
Genentech posts Strategic Business Development openings on its careers portal, and you can also find sponsorship-filtered listings through Migrate Mate. Applications typically require a resume, and competitive candidates demonstrate direct experience with biopharma licensing, co-development agreements, or asset valuation. Tailoring your materials to Genentech's therapeutic focus areas, particularly oncology and rare disease, strengthens your application considerably.
Which visa types does Genentech commonly use for Strategic Business Development roles?
Genentech supports several visa categories for this function, including H-1B, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates still within their authorized work period. For longer-term permanent residence, Genentech also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through the PERM labor certification process filed with the DOL.
What qualifications does Genentech expect for Strategic Business Development candidates?
Most Strategic Business Development roles at Genentech require a degree in life sciences, business, or a related field, with an MBA or advanced science degree common at the senior level. Hands-on experience with transaction structures, such as licensing negotiations, joint ventures, or due diligence, is typically expected. Candidates with exposure to Genentech's core therapeutic areas, including oncology, neuroscience, or immunology, tend to be more competitive.
How do visa processing timelines affect my start date at Genentech?
If you require an H-1B transfer or new petition, standard USCIS processing runs three to six months, though premium processing can reduce that to around 15 business days. For OPT candidates, cap-gap rules allow continued work authorization if your H-1B petition is filed before your OPT expires and your program end date falls before October 1. Communicating your status early in the offer process gives Genentech's HR team time to coordinate filings without delaying your start.
