Job Roles at Northwestern University
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Northwestern University H-1B Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target research and faculty pipelines
Northwestern's strongest H-1B sponsorship history is in research and academic roles. Postdoctoral positions, research scientist openings, and tenure-track faculty roles are where international candidates have the most consistent path to H-1B support.
Understand Northwestern's HR-driven H-1B process
Northwestern processes H-1B petitions through its central HR and international office. Confirm early in the hiring process that the department has budget approved for sponsorship, as individual departments often control that decision independently.
Apply to technical and clinical departments
Engineering, computer science, biomedical research, and clinical roles at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine have a strong track record of H-1B sponsorship. These departments hire internationally and are experienced with the petition process.
Use verified sponsorship data when job searching
Not every Northwestern posting will mention H-1B explicitly. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus on roles where Northwestern has actually filed H-1B petitions before.
Raise sponsorship early in the interview process
Northwestern hiring managers in research and technical roles are generally familiar with H-1B, but administrative and non-research departments may not be. Clarifying sponsorship willingness before the final interview round avoids late-stage surprises.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Northwestern University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Northwestern University sponsors H-1B visas. It is an active H-1B sponsor with a consistent filing history, particularly for roles in research, academia, engineering, and healthcare. Sponsorship decisions are made at the department level in coordination with Northwestern's Office of Human Resources and the International Office.
Which roles and departments at Northwestern University are most likely to offer H-1B sponsorship?
Research scientist, postdoctoral fellow, and tenure-track faculty positions are the most consistently sponsored roles. Technical departments in engineering, computer science, and biomedical sciences, along with clinical roles at Feinberg School of Medicine, have strong H-1B sponsorship track records. Administrative and non-research roles are less predictable.
How does the H-1B application process work at Northwestern University?
Once a department commits to sponsoring you, Northwestern's HR team works with immigration counsel to file the H-1B petition with USCIS. The department must obtain internal budget approval first. Northwestern then prepares the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before submitting the full H-1B petition on your behalf.
How long does it take to get H-1B sponsorship through Northwestern University?
Standard H-1B processing through USCIS takes three to six months after the April lottery. If Northwestern opts for premium processing, USCIS issues a decision within 15 business days. Cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, so timing your offer relative to the March registration window is critical.
How do I find H-1B jobs at Northwestern University as an international candidate?
Search Northwestern's careers portal and filter for research, clinical, and technical roles, which carry the highest sponsorship likelihood. Migrate Mate lists verified H-1B sponsors and can help you identify Northwestern openings where international candidates have previously been sponsored, saving time you'd otherwise spend screening postings manually.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Northwestern University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
