Target faculty and research postings first
Penn State's H-1B filings cluster heavily around academic roles: tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and research scientists. Filter your job search to these categories before applying to administrative or support roles, which are far less likely to receive H-1B sponsorship.
Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
USCIS requires that your position meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning a bachelor's degree in a specific field is a minimum requirement. Use O*NET to confirm your job title's typical education requirements before accepting an offer from Penn State's hiring team.
Check prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Penn State must pay you at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your occupation code in Centre County before you negotiate, so your offer aligns with what USCIS will expect to see.
Confirm Penn State's Office of Human Resources handles filing
Penn State processes H-1B petitions through its central HR and immigration services office, not individual hiring departments. Once you receive a formal offer, ask HR directly about their internal filing timeline so you can plan around the April USCIS cap registration window.
Search Penn State's verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, pull Penn State's H-1B filing history by department and job title on Migrate Mate. You'll see which roles the university has actually sponsored, so you can prioritize positions with a real track record rather than relying on what the job posting implies.
Prepare credentials documentation early for academic roles
Penn State's faculty and research positions often require credential evaluations for foreign degrees. Commission an evaluation from a NACES-approved service before your interview stage. Delays in credential verification can push back your petition filing and affect your start date eligibility.
Penn State University H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Penn State University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Penn State University sponsors H-1B visas, primarily for faculty, researchers, and technical staff in academic and research departments. The university's central HR and immigration services office manages the petition process. Sponsorship for administrative or non-specialty roles is less common, so confirm directly with HR when you receive a job offer.
Which departments at Penn State University are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas?
Academic departments in STEM fields, social sciences, and humanities regularly sponsor H-1B visas for faculty and postdoctoral researchers. Penn State's research institutes and centers, including those focused on engineering, life sciences, and information technology, are also active sponsors. Administrative and operational roles outside these areas rarely receive H-1B sponsorship.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Penn State University?
After receiving a formal offer, Penn State's HR and immigration services team initiates the H-1B petition on your behalf. The process includes a Labor Condition Application filed with DOL, followed by the USCIS petition. You'll need to provide educational credentials, employment documentation, and passport information. Your hiring department coordinates with HR, but your primary contact for status updates is the immigration services office.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take at Penn State University?
For cap-subject H-1B petitions, Penn State must file during the April registration window, with an earliest start date of October 1. Standard USCIS processing runs several months after filing. Premium processing is available to reduce adjudication time to around 15 business days. If you're already on a valid visa status, Penn State may file a cap-exempt or transfer petition on a different timeline.
How do I find H-1B jobs at Penn State University that are likely to lead to sponsorship?
Search Penn State's verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate to identify which roles and departments have a documented track record of sponsorship. Focus on faculty, research, and technical positions rather than broadly applying across all postings. Reaching out to the relevant department's administrative coordinator before applying can also clarify whether H-1B sponsorship is available for a specific role.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Penn State University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
