Match your credentials to Stanford's specialty occupation standard
Stanford's H-1B petitions must establish that your role requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. Pull the O*NET profile for your target job title before applying and confirm the degree requirement language matches your background.
Target research and technical departments first
Stanford's H-1B filings concentrate in research administration, engineering, computer science, and life sciences. Faculty positions and postdoctoral research roles in these departments generate the most consistent sponsorship activity, so prioritize applications where your discipline aligns directly with departmental research priorities.
Confirm your salary clears the prevailing wage threshold early
Stanford must certify your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your SOC code and Stanford's zip code before negotiations so you enter the offer stage knowing the minimum USCIS and DOL will accept.
Use Migrate Mate to verify Stanford's LCA filing history by role
Before targeting a specific department, search Migrate Mate to see Stanford's Labor Condition Application filing history filtered by occupation. This shows which job titles Stanford has actively sponsored, helping you prioritize roles where sponsorship is already an established part of the hiring process.
Ask about H-1B timing before accepting any offer
Stanford's academic hiring calendar can conflict with H-1B cap deadlines. If your start date falls between April and October, clarify with the hiring team whether they'll file in the cap season that lets you begin on October 1, or whether a later start is expected.
Prepare for the cap-subject petition process as an outside hire
Unless you're transferring from another H-1B employer, Stanford must enter you in USCIS's annual lottery, which selects registrations in March for an October 1 start. Confirm with Stanford's international office whether they submit cap registrations for your role type before signing any offer.
Stanford University H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Stanford University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Stanford University sponsors H-1B visas across a range of academic, research, and technical roles. Stanford's international services office manages the petition process, and the university has an established track record of filing H-1B petitions for positions in engineering, computer science, life sciences, and research administration.
Which departments at Stanford University typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at Stanford is most common in research-intensive departments including engineering, computer science, medicine, and the biological sciences. Administrative and technical roles supporting Stanford's research infrastructure also see regular sponsorship. Faculty and postdoctoral positions are among the most frequently sponsored role types across the university.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Stanford University?
Stanford's Bechtel International Center handles H-1B petitions on behalf of departments. Once a department extends an offer and confirms sponsorship, they work with the international office to file the Labor Condition Application with DOL and the I-129 petition with USCIS. You'll need to provide credentials, degree documentation, and employment details.
How long does the H-1B process take at Stanford University?
From offer acceptance to an approved H-1B, the process typically takes several months. Stanford files during the annual cap season for October 1 start dates, so timing depends heavily on where your hire falls in the academic calendar. USCIS premium processing is available and can reduce the adjudication window significantly.
How do I find open H-1B roles at Stanford University?
Migrate Mate surfaces roles at universities like Stanford filtered by verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you can focus on job titles Stanford has actively sponsored rather than guessing. Pair that with Stanford's own careers portal and target departments where your academic background and research specialization directly match active hiring needs.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Stanford University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
