Target faculty and research postings first
UNF's H-1B sponsorship is concentrated in academic and research roles. Prioritize positions in departments where specialized expertise and advanced degrees are required, as these are most likely to come with H-1B support from the university.
Engage the Office of International Services early
UNF's Office of International Services manages immigration sponsorship. Reaching out before or during the offer stage helps you understand internal timelines, paperwork requirements, and whether your specific role qualifies for H-1B sponsorship.
Confirm sponsorship intent during the interview
Not every UNF position includes H-1B sponsorship. Ask hiring managers directly whether the department has sponsored H-1B visas for similar roles before accepting any offer, so there are no surprises late in the process.
Align your application with the H-1B cap timeline
UNF, as a higher education institution, is cap-exempt for H-1B filings. This means they can file year-round rather than waiting for the April lottery window, giving you more flexibility on start dates and offer timing.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified UNF openings
Finding roles at employers with a real sponsorship track record matters. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by actual sponsorship history, helping you focus your applications at UNF and comparable institutions.
Tailor your materials to the role's specialty occupation requirement
H-1B approval at UNF depends on demonstrating your position qualifies as a specialty occupation. Make sure your resume and any supporting documents clearly show the direct connection between your degree field and the specific role being offered.

Does University of North Florida sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, University of North Florida sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying positions, primarily in faculty, research, and specialized professional staff roles. As a higher education institution, UNF is cap-exempt, meaning it can file H-1B petitions year-round without being subject to the annual lottery that applies to most private employers.
Which roles and departments at University of North Florida typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at UNF is most common in academic departments hiring tenure-track or visiting faculty, research-focused positions requiring advanced technical expertise, and select professional staff roles where a specialized degree is a firm requirement. Administrative and general support positions are rarely sponsored.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at University of North Florida?
Once you have a job offer, UNF's Office of International Services coordinates the H-1B petition with an immigration attorney. You will provide documentation supporting your qualifications and specialty occupation status. Because UNF is cap-exempt, the process is not tied to the April lottery window and can begin when your employment is confirmed.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take at University of North Florida?
Processing time depends on whether UNF files under standard or premium processing. Standard adjudication typically takes several months, while premium processing reduces that to a matter of weeks. Cap-exempt institutions like UNF can file at any time of year, so your start date is not locked to a specific government cycle.
How do I find H-1B jobs at University of North Florida?
Check UNF's official careers portal for open positions, and confirm sponsorship availability directly with the hiring department before applying. Migrate Mate can also help you identify UNF roles alongside other verified H-1B sponsors in higher education, so you can compare options and apply where sponsorship is most likely.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at University of North Florida?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
