Frame your technical fluency upfront
MathWorks Business Development roles require you to speak credibly with engineers and researchers. Highlight any experience selling or positioning technical software, data tools, or simulation platforms, because surface-level sales backgrounds rarely advance past screening.
Target industry verticals MathWorks prioritizes
Focus your applications on roles tied to aerospace, automotive, semiconductor, or quantitative finance. These verticals drive the bulk of MATLAB adoption, so candidates with domain relationships in those industries are stronger sponsorship bets for MathWorks.
Clarify your OPT or grace period runway early
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility before your first interview. MathWorks sponsors H-1B petitions, but USCIS processing timelines mean your available work authorization window needs to align with the cap-subject April filing cycle.
Understand how MathWorks structures sponsorship conversations
Sponsorship decisions at tech software companies typically involve HR, legal, and the hiring manager. Ask during the offer stage which visa category the team expects to file, so you're not assuming H-1B when a TN or E-3 path may be faster for your situation.
Verify your credential equivalency before interviews
H-1B eligibility for Business Development roles requires a qualifying specialty occupation degree. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before interviews so you can answer questions about equivalency confidently.

Does MathWorks sponsor H-1B visas for Business Development roles?
Yes, MathWorks sponsors H-1B visas for Business Development positions. The company has an established sponsorship process and works with candidates through the full petition cycle, including the USCIS cap-subject lottery that opens each April for an October 1 start date. If you're already on OPT or another valid status, MathWorks can file a change of status petition directly.
How do I apply for Business Development jobs at MathWorks?
Applications go through MathWorks' careers portal, where Business Development roles are listed by region and industry vertical. Tailor your resume to show domain expertise in industries where MATLAB has strong adoption, such as aerospace, automotive, or finance. Migrate Mate aggregates MathWorks Business Development openings in one place, letting you filter by sponsorship type before you apply.
Which visa types does MathWorks commonly sponsor for Business Development positions?
MathWorks sponsors several visa categories for Business Development hires, including H-1B, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and J-1 for certain training or exchange arrangements. The company also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for eligible students and graduates. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status, so confirm the specific path with MathWorks HR during the offer stage.
What qualifications does MathWorks expect for Business Development roles?
MathWorks typically looks for candidates with a technical undergraduate degree, such as engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics, combined with experience in software sales, partnerships, or account management. Roles often require the ability to engage with engineers and research teams directly, so a background that bridges technical understanding with commercial execution is more competitive than a pure sales profile.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline when joining MathWorks in a Business Development role?
If you need H-1B sponsorship, the cap-subject petition window opens April 1 each year, with a lottery registration period in March and an October 1 employment start date. MathWorks' established sponsorship infrastructure means they're familiar with this cycle, but you need to confirm your current status covers you through at least October 1. TN and Green Card pathways through PERM follow different timelines and don't carry lottery risk.
