INTRODUCTION
MathWorks has a hybrid work model that enables staff members to split their time between office and home. The hybrid model provides the advantage of having both in-person time with colleagues and flexible at-home life optimizations.
MathWorks uses Workday HCM and Payroll, along with several supporting modules, to manage payroll operations. We are seeking a Payroll Business Systems Analyst to support and evolve our Workday Payroll platform.
In this role, you will develop deep functional expertise in Workday Payroll and partner closely with Payroll, HR, HRIS, and Finance to ensure accurate, compliant, and well-controlled payroll operations. You will play a key role in evaluating system changes, supporting ongoing releases, improving processes, and ensuring payroll data integrity.
MathWorks nurtures growth, appreciates inclusivity, encourages initiative, values teamwork, shares success, and rewards excellence.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of Workday Payroll, including configuration, reporting, and application support, as well as strong knowledge of HCM, Absence, and Time Tracking modules and their integrations with payroll.
- Partner with Payroll, HR, and HRIS to translate evolving business needs and regulatory requirements into clear system requirements and configuration updates.
- Assess the impact of weekly and semi-annual Workday releases, enhancements, and fixes; develop and execute test plans and document results.
- Own Workday Payroll reporting in support of Payroll and HROps, including requirements gathering, report design and development, design reviews, and iterative enhancements.
- Collaborate with global stakeholders to identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Lead payroll-related initiatives by defining scope, creating project charters, obtaining approvals, and executing agreed-upon solutions, including configuration changes, impact assessment, testing, and change-management communications.
- Participate in bi-weekly payroll reviews by identifying anomalies, escalating issues, and conducting root-cause analysis as needed.
- Lead the 401k annual discretionary match calculation, as well as the financial, Workers’ Compensation, and 401(k) plan audits.
- Stay current with payroll and tax regulations and proactively communicate relevant changes and impacts to management.
- Serve as a backup for core payroll processing activities to ensure continuity of operations.
You must prioritize effectively to meet deadlines, maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and communicate clearly and confidentially with employees across the organization. This role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a strong customer-service mindset.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor's degree and 6 years of professional work experience (or a master's degree and 3 years of professional work experience, or equivalent experience) is required.

Tips for Finding Business Operations Jobs at MathWorks
Frame Your Degree for Specialty Occupation Review
H-1B approval for Business Operations roles hinges on whether USCIS classifies the position as a specialty occupation. A business, finance, or operations management degree strengthens your case more than a general management background. Align your resume to the specific analytical or systems-focused requirements in the job posting.
Target MathWorks Roles With Cross-Functional Scope
MathWorks Business Operations postings often sit at the intersection of finance, sales operations, or product strategy. Roles with clear analytical or process ownership components are stronger candidates for H-1B sponsorship than pure coordinator positions. Filter your applications toward roles that specify tools like Salesforce, SAP, or data reporting.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Sponsorship-Confirmed Openings
Not every Business Operations listing at MathWorks signals sponsorship readiness equally. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles where MathWorks has a documented sponsorship history for this function, so you're not guessing which positions are worth pursuing.
Verify Your OPT Timeline Before Applying
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility before submitting applications. MathWorks is E-Verify enrolled, which is required for STEM OPT. A 24-month STEM extension can bridge the gap while your employer files for H-1B in the next lottery cycle.
Understand When PERM Labor Certification Applies
EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for Business Operations roles typically requires DOL PERM labor certification, which involves a formal recruitment process before your employer files. MathWorks pursuing this path for you usually follows internal tenure and performance milestones, not immediate hire.
Negotiate Sponsorship Commitment Before Signing
Ask the recruiter directly whether MathWorks will sponsor the specific visa type you need, not just whether the company sponsors in general. Get written confirmation in your offer letter that sponsorship is included, since verbal assurances don't bind the employer during USCIS processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MathWorks sponsor H-1B visas for Business Operations?
Yes, MathWorks sponsors H-1B visas for Business Operations roles. The key factor is whether the specific position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which generally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. Roles with defined analytical, financial, or systems responsibilities tend to meet this threshold more cleanly than general administrative positions.
How do I apply for Business Operations jobs at MathWorks?
Applications go through the MathWorks careers portal at mathworks.com/careers. Tailor your resume to the specific responsibilities listed, since Business Operations postings at MathWorks often emphasize process improvement, cross-functional collaboration, and proficiency with enterprise tools. You can also browse sponsorship-confirmed openings through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa type and employer sponsorship history.
Which visa types does MathWorks commonly use for Business Operations hires?
MathWorks sponsors H-1B, TN visa, J-1 visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Business Operations roles, and pursues EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for longer-term employees. TN visa is available only to Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying categories. F-1 STEM OPT is a common entry path before transitioning to H-1B, provided the role qualifies and MathWorks confirms E-Verify participation.
What qualifications does MathWorks expect for Business Operations candidates?
Most Business Operations roles at MathWorks require a bachelor's degree in business, finance, operations, or a related analytical field. Experience with enterprise systems such as Salesforce or SAP is frequently listed. Roles supporting sales operations, revenue analytics, or strategic planning often carry stronger sponsorship justification because the degree-to-job connection is direct and well-documented for USCIS purposes.
How do I time my application around the H-1B lottery?
The H-1B lottery registration window typically opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer needs to file before your OPT expires. Starting your job search at MathWorks at least six months before your work authorization ends gives you enough runway to go through interviews, receive an offer, and have your employer register in time.
