Get ASCP Certification Before Applying
Quest Diagnostics consistently expects ASCP Board of Certification credentials for Medical Laboratory Scientists. Securing your MLS(ASCP) before submitting applications removes the most common hiring bottleneck and signals you meet the clinical competency standard their compliance team requires for visa sponsorship.
Target High-Volume Quest Lab Locations
Quest's regional reference laboratories, including its Nichols Institute facilities, process the highest test volumes and carry more recurring MLS headcount needs. Focusing your applications on these larger lab hubs increases the likelihood of landing a role where sponsorship approval has clear precedent.
Verify Your Degree Meets DOL Specialty Occupation Standards
The DOL and USCIS require a direct relationship between your degree field and the MLS role. A degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related biological science field supports the specialty occupation determination that underpins H-1B and Green Card filings.
Understand Quest's PERM Timeline for EB-3 Sponsorship
If you're targeting permanent residence through an EB-3 petition, PERM labor certification through the DOL typically adds 12 to 18 months before USCIS even receives your I-140. Raise this pathway early in the offer negotiation so both sides set realistic expectations on timing.
Confirm OPT STEM Extension Eligibility for Clinical Science Degrees
Medical Laboratory Science programs classified under CIP code 51.1005 qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of work authorization on F-1 status. Use that window to build clinical experience at Quest before H-1B cap season.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Active MLS Openings
MLS roles at Quest open and close quickly across dozens of lab sites nationwide. Use Migrate Mate to filter active Medical Laboratory Scientist openings at Quest Diagnostics by visa sponsorship type so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is explicitly on the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Quest Diagnostics sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Laboratory Scientists?
Yes. Quest Diagnostics has a documented track record of sponsoring H-1B visas for Medical Laboratory Scientists. Sponsorship is most common for candidates who already hold ASCP certification and a qualifying science degree. Quest's HR and immigration teams work with outside counsel to file the required Labor Condition Application with the DOL and the H-1B petition with USCIS.
How do I apply for Medical Laboratory Scientist jobs at Quest Diagnostics?
Applications go through Quest Diagnostics' careers portal at questdiagnostics.com/careers. Search by job title and filter by location to find active MLS openings. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse Medical Laboratory Scientist positions at Quest that are open to visa sponsorship, which saves time filtering roles where international applicants are actively considered.
Which visa types does Quest Diagnostics commonly use for Medical Laboratory Scientists?
Quest sponsors H-1B visas as the primary nonimmigrant work visa for MLS roles, and also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students or recent graduates. For permanent residence, Quest has filed EB-2 and EB-3 petitions for clinical laboratory staff. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose qualifications align with the covered USMCA occupation categories.
What qualifications does Quest Diagnostics expect for Medical Laboratory Scientist roles?
Quest typically requires a bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related biological science field, along with ASCP Board of Certification credentials (MLS(ASCP) or equivalent). Some high-complexity lab positions require additional state licensure depending on location. Hands-on experience with automated analyzers and laboratory information systems is commonly listed in job postings.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Quest?
For H-1B sponsorship, the timeline depends on cap lottery selection in April, with employment starting October 1 at the earliest. USCIS premium processing can accelerate the petition decision to 15 business days once filed. EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM takes considerably longer, often two to four years or more, depending on your country of birth and priority date movement.
