Tips for Finding OT Jobs at Rush University Medical Center
Verify your NBCOT credentials before applying
Rush requires OTs to hold or be eligible for Illinois state licensure, which depends on passing the NBCOT exam. Confirm your credential evaluation is complete before submitting applications, since credentialing delays are the most common bottleneck for international OT candidates.
Target Rush's rehabilitation and neurology units
Rush's rehabilitation institute and neuroscience service lines have the deepest OT staffing needs. Applying directly to postings in those units positions you where hiring demand is most active and where sponsorship conversations are most routine for this role.
Clarify your visa type during the offer stage
Rush sponsors multiple visa categories for OTs. When you receive an offer, ask HR directly whether they're filing an H-1B, TN, or another pathway for your specific situation so you can align your timeline with USCIS or DOL processing requirements.
Use Migrate Mate to track open OT roles
Rush posts OT positions across multiple platforms and they fill quickly. Use Migrate Mate to monitor and filter Rush's active OT openings by visa sponsorship eligibility so you're applying as soon as roles open rather than catching postings after they've closed.
Prepare a specialty-specific clinical portfolio
Rush's OT interviews frequently assess clinical reasoning in complex cases, particularly in acute and neurological settings. Prepare documented case examples from your fieldwork or prior roles that demonstrate advanced clinical judgment, not just general OT competency.
Understand the H-1B cap and Rush's filing timeline
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Align your offer acceptance timeline with Rush's HR team early so your petition is ready before the registration window, not after it closes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Rush University Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for OTs?
Yes, Rush University Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for occupational therapists. OT roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria because they require at least a master's degree in occupational therapy for licensure in Illinois. Rush's HR team manages the H-1B petition process, including the Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL, once an offer is extended.
Which visa types does Rush University Medical Center commonly use for OT roles?
Rush sponsors OT roles through several pathways depending on your situation. H-1B is the most common for candidates already in the U.S. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican OTs who meet USMCA requirements. F-1 OPT and CPT cover students completing fieldwork or graduating from U.S. programs. Rush also supports J-1 visa and employment-based Green Card sponsorship including EB-2 and EB-3 categories.
What qualifications and experience does Rush University Medical Center expect for OT positions?
Rush requires a master's or doctoral degree in occupational therapy and eligibility for Illinois state licensure through the IDFPR, which depends on passing the NBCOT certification exam. Most clinical roles expect at least one to two years of experience in a relevant specialty such as acute care, neurological rehabilitation, or hand therapy. New graduates with strong clinical placement experience are considered for select roles.
How do I apply for OT jobs at Rush University Medical Center?
You can find and apply for OT roles at Rush through Migrate Mate, which filters open positions by visa sponsorship eligibility so you can confirm sponsorship before applying. Rush's application process involves an online submission followed by a clinical interview that typically includes scenario-based questions. Having your NBCOT status and licensure documentation ready before the interview stage speeds up the credentialing review.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for an OT role at Rush?
The timeline depends on your visa category. For H-1B, USCIS registration opens each March for an October 1 start, so you need an offer in hand before then. TN and OPT transitions can move faster, often within weeks of an offer. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, the process typically takes one to two years after your start date. Discuss your specific category with Rush HR early in the offer process.
