Align your credentials to UC Merced's specialty occupation standard
H-1B eligibility for Teaching roles requires a direct link between your degree field and the courses you'll teach. Pull the job posting's required qualifications and map your transcripts to them explicitly before applying.
Target open faculty searches during fall recruitment cycles
UC Merced runs most tenure-track and lecturer searches between September and January. Applying during active search committee windows gives your materials the best chance of reaching a hiring department that can initiate sponsorship.
Request LCA timing details before accepting an offer
Your employer files the Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS sees your H-1B petition. Ask the international scholars office for their typical LCA-to-petition timeline so you can plan your start date without gaps in work authorization.

Find Teaching at University of California Merced JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of California Merced sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, UC Merced sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching roles that qualify as specialty occupations, meaning the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. The university's international scholars office manages the petition process, coordinating the Labor Condition Application with DOL and the I-129 filing with USCIS on behalf of the hiring department.
Which visa types are commonly used for Teaching roles at University of California Merced?
H-1B is the most common pathway for full-time Teaching positions. F-1 OPT and CPT cover candidates still completing U.S. degrees or in their post-completion work authorization window. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying Teaching roles. For longer-term faculty, UC Merced also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM process.
What qualifications are expected for Teaching roles at University of California Merced?
Expectations vary by role type. Tenure-track faculty positions typically require a completed doctorate in the relevant discipline and a research or publication record. Lecturer and visiting instructor roles may accept a master's degree combined with demonstrated teaching experience. For H-1B purposes, your degree field must correspond directly to the subject matter you'll be teaching, not just broadly to education.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at University of California Merced?
Applications go through UC Merced's official careers portal, where Teaching positions are listed with full requirements and submission instructions. Most faculty searches require a cover letter, CV, teaching statement, and letters of recommendation submitted through the portal. You can find current Teaching openings that include visa sponsorship by browsing Migrate Mate, which surfaces UC Merced listings filtered for international candidates.
How do I plan my timeline when pursuing a Teaching role at UC Merced on a visa?
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with USCIS accepting them in April for an October 1 start. If you receive a Teaching offer after April, your start date may be delayed a full year unless you qualify for a cap-exempt filing, which UC Merced as a nonprofit research university may support. Confirm your cap-exempt eligibility with the international scholars office early in negotiations.
