Align your credentials with U.S. standards
University finance roles often require CPA eligibility or familiarity with GASB accounting standards used in public higher education. Confirm your foreign credentials have been evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before applying, as HR may request this early in screening.
Target roles tied to sponsored research
Research grants and sponsored programs departments at universities frequently hire finance professionals to manage federal and private funding. These positions have clear fiscal accountability needs, which strengthens the specialty occupation argument for H-1B and E-3 petitions.
Understand the university's fiscal hiring calendar
Public universities like the University of Utah hire heavily before the start of each fiscal year, typically July 1. Applying in late winter or early spring gives you the best chance of an offer timeline that aligns with H-1B cap filing windows or E-3 processing.
Confirm OPT STEM extension eligibility early
Finance roles at a research university can qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in a STEM-designated field like financial mathematics or management information systems. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer on standard OPT.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Finance roles
Browsing general job boards makes it hard to identify which postings are open to visa holders. Use Migrate Mate to filter University of Utah Finance positions by visa type so you're only pursuing roles where sponsorship is a realistic outcome.
Clarify PERM timing if you're targeting permanent residency
Universities can sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards, but PERM labor certification through DOL is a multi-step process that typically starts after you've been in a role for at least one year. Ask HR about the institution's standard practice during the offer stage, not after.

Find Finance at University of Utah JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Utah sponsor H-1B visas for Finance roles?
Yes, University of Utah sponsors H-1B visas for Finance positions where the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Roles like financial analyst, budget analyst, and grants accountant have supported H-1B petitions at research universities. You'll need a qualifying degree and an offer before the university can file a petition with USCIS.
How do I apply for Finance jobs at University of Utah?
Applications go through the University of Utah's official careers portal. Finance postings typically require a resume, cover letter, and sometimes work samples or references. If you need visa sponsorship, flag that early in the process. Migrate Mate lists open Finance roles at the University of Utah filtered by visa type, which helps you identify the right opportunities before applying directly through the university.
Which visa types are commonly used for Finance roles at University of Utah?
The most common visa types for Finance professionals at the University of Utah are H-1B, E-3 (for Australian citizens), TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying finance occupations), and J-1 for exchange visitors. F-1 OPT and CPT are also supported for students and recent graduates. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship is available for longer-term hires, subject to PERM labor certification through DOL.
What qualifications are expected for Finance positions at University of Utah?
Most Finance roles require a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. Senior positions in research administration or financial planning often prefer a master's degree or CPA licensure. Familiarity with fund accounting, GASB standards, or federal grant compliance under Uniform Guidance is a practical advantage at a public research university like Utah, where much of the finance work ties to sponsored research.
How do I navigate the visa sponsorship process timeline for a Finance offer at University of Utah?
Once you receive an offer, the university's international hiring office coordinates the petition preparation. For H-1B cap-subject cases, the filing window opens April 1 for an October 1 start, so offer timing matters significantly. E-3 and TN categories process faster and aren't cap-subject, which gives more flexibility. Budget two to four months for H-1B processing without premium, or one to three weeks with USCIS premium processing.
