DESCRIPTION
AWS Construction Manager
Job Overview
The AWS Construction Manager (CM) oversees the entire construction process for data center infrastructure projects within Amazon Web Services. This role serves as AWS's primary representative on-site, managing general contractors and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with AWS standards. Construction Managers are responsible for implementing environmental requirements, safety protocols, and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management and Oversight
- Oversee construction projects from groundbreaking through Power Facilities Hand Off (PFHO) and substantial completion
- Manage general contractors, specialty contractors, and subcontractors to ensure project deliverables are met
- Monitor project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation
- Lead project meetings and coordinate between internal stakeholders and external partners
- Make critical decisions on construction methods, schedule adjustments, and issue resolution
- Ensure proper project documentation and reporting in Procore construction management platform
Safety Management
- Promote and enforce AWS health and safety standards on construction sites
- Review incident reports submitted by general contractors and verify severity level classifications
- Coordinate with general contractors on incident investigations and corrective actions
- Conduct regular safety inspections and site walks to identify hazards and recognize safe behaviors
- Monitor Serious Incident Rate (SIR) performance and implement preventive measures
- Ensure general contractors report all incidents within required timelines (notification within 2 hours, preliminary report within 24 hours)
- Partner with Regional Safety Engineers (RSEs) to review investigation reports and assess control measures
- Assign and track completion of General Contractor Environmental Awareness Training through the Learn Platform
Environmental Compliance
- Communicate AWS environmental expectations to general contractors during onboarding and kickoff meetings
- Ensure general contractors develop and implement Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP) prior to construction start
- Report environmental observations in Procore as required
- Oversee general contractor management of environmental controls including erosion and sediment control devices
- Escalate Tier 1 and Tier 2 environmental incidents to the Environmental and Legal teams
- Monitor general contractor compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for inspections, observations, and incident management
- Partner with AWS Environmental team on compliance matters and issue resolution
- Verify environmental permit requirements are met before substantial completion
Quality and Technical Management
- Ensure construction activities comply with AWS Basis of Design (BOD) standards and specifications
- Review and approve contractor submittals, shop drawings, and construction methods
- Coordinate resolution of technical issues and Requests for Information (RFIs)
- Oversee commissioning activities and Integrated System Testing (IST)
- Verify as-built documentation accuracy and completeness
- Ensure proper vibration monitoring and control measures for work near operational data centers
Stakeholder Coordination
- Serve as primary point of contact between AWS and general contractors
- Coordinate with internal teams including Design Engineering, Field Engineering, Operations, Environmental, Health & Safety, Procurement, and Controls
- Communicate project status, risks, and issues to senior leadership through Weekly Business Reviews (WBR) and Monthly Business Reviews (MBR)
- Facilitate collaboration between multiple contractors and vendors on-site
- Manage relationships with local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ)
Cost Management
- Monitor project budgets and track expenditures
- Review and approve contractor payment applications
- Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality standards
- Manage change orders and scope modifications
- Ensure cost documentation is accurate and complete in Procore
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain comprehensive project records in Procore construction management system
- Track and report on key performance indicators and project metrics
- Prepare project status reports and presentations for leadership
- Document lessons learned and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure proper closeout documentation before facility handover
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field
- Advanced degree preferred
Experience
- 7-10 years of construction management experience with increasing responsibility
- 5+ years managing large-scale commercial or industrial construction projects ($50M+ value)
- Experience with mission-critical facilities, data centers, or similar complex infrastructure projects
- Proven track record of delivering projects on time and within budget
- Experience managing multiple contractors and coordinating complex construction activities
Technical Knowledge
- Deep understanding of construction methods, materials, and building systems
- Knowledge of MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) systems for mission-critical facilities
- Familiarity with commissioning processes and system testing
- Understanding of building codes, safety regulations, and environmental compliance requirements
- Proficiency with construction management software (Procore experience highly preferred)
- Ability to read and interpret complex construction drawings and specifications
Leadership and Management Skills
- Strong leadership presence with ability to influence without direct authority
- Excellent decision-making and problem-solving abilities
- Proven ability to manage and develop teams
- Experience managing contractor relationships and holding vendors accountable

Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Professional Construction Manager (PCM) certification
- LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) or similar sustainability credentials
- Experience with AWS infrastructure or cloud computing projects
- Knowledge of data center operations and requirements
- Experience with Design-Build or Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery methods
- Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) coordination processes
- International construction experience for global roles
Work Environment
- Primary work location at active construction sites
- Office work for planning, documentation, and meetings
- Requires wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) on construction sites
- May require travel to multiple project sites within assigned region
- Occasional work outside normal business hours to support construction activities or address urgent issues
- Exposure to construction site conditions including noise, weather, and physical demands
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk construction sites and climb stairs regularly
- Capability to wear required safety equipment for extended periods

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience carrying new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
- Experience in MS Excel, Word, and Windows Operating Systems
- Experience with power management and power monitoring systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of project management in data centers or comparable critical infrastructure experience
- Knowledge of critical data center equipment
- Knowledge of engineering documentation, electrical diagrams and standard operating procedures
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, or OSHA
- Experience in project management in data centers or comparable critical infrastructure
- Experience in Data Center Engineering Operations, with a deep understanding of electrical and mechanical data center infrastructure
- Experience reading and interpreting construction specifications and drawings for all domains

Compensation
- Salary Range: $111,300.00 - $186,100.00 USD annually

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
