Construction Manager Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction manager in Iowa?
Most Iowa construction managers start with a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture, then build site experience as a project engineer or superintendent. Iowa regulates general contracting through the Iowa Division of Labor, and many employers require or prefer candidates who hold or are eligible for a state contractor registration. Industry credentials like the CCM through the Construction Manager Certification Institute strengthen applications for senior roles.
Which companies hire construction managers in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring construction managers in Iowa include Eaton, Michels, and JLL, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's mix of large regional general contractors, national builders with Des Moines and Cedar Rapids offices, and public-sector owners in transportation and healthcare means openings appear across a range of project types and company sizes.
Which Iowa cities have the most construction manager jobs?
Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Ankeny have the most construction manager openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the largest share of listings as the state's commercial and institutional construction hub, while Cedar Rapids supports steady demand through manufacturing and healthcare facility work, and Davenport benefits from industrial and infrastructure projects tied to the Quad Cities corridor.
Are there remote construction manager jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. About 11% of construction manager openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which reflects how site-dependent the role is by nature. The portions of the job most likely to be handled remotely are preconstruction planning, estimating, and owner reporting, while active site oversight almost always requires physical presence.
How can I get hired as a construction manager in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a project engineer or field coordinator role with one of Iowa's larger general contractors, such as Weitz Company or Ryan Companies, both of which run structured development programs for recent graduates. Internship experience with an Iowa general contractor or public agency, combined with a construction management degree from Iowa State University, significantly improves early career prospects. Pursuing an entry-level OSHA certification and learning Procore before applying gives candidates a concrete edge.
