Counselor Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a counselor in Hawaii?
To become a licensed counselor in Hawaii you must earn a master's degree in counseling or a related field, then apply through the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Professional and Vocational Licensing division. Depending on your specialty, you will pursue licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor, each requiring supervised post-degree hours and a board-approved exam before you can practice independently.
Which companies hire counselors in Hawaii?
Companies currently hiring counselors in Hawaii include Leidos, Hilton, and State of Hawaii, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's counselor market is also anchored by state agencies and nonprofit community health organizations that maintain year-round openings across Oahu and the neighbor islands.
Which Hawaii cities have the most counselor jobs?
Honolulu, Kailua, and Wailea have the most counselor openings in Hawaii. Honolulu dominates because it is home to the state's largest hospitals, school district offices, and behavioral health nonprofits, while Hilo and Kailua-Kona reflect growing demand on the Big Island driven by community health centers serving rural and underserved populations.
Are there remote counselor jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because much counselor work involves in-person sessions and on-site school or clinic presence. About 0% of counselor openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and telehealth roles covering mental health or substance use counseling are the segment most likely to allow fully remote schedules.
How can I get hired as a counselor in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a counselor trainee, case manager, or crisis line associate role while completing your supervised hours toward licensure. Hawaii community mental health centers, school districts on Oahu and Maui, and organizations such as Hina Mauka regularly bring on associates and pre-licensed staff. Earning a Hawaii provisional license early and building experience with Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander communities strengthens your application considerably with local employers.
