Does a Business Development Lead role qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT eligibility depends on whether the role is an integral part of your established curriculum, not on the job title alone. Business Development Lead positions that involve market analysis, partnership strategy, or revenue operations typically satisfy the requirement for business and management programs, but your DSO makes the final determination based on how the duties align with your specific enrolled courses.
Can I work full-time as a Business Development Lead on CPT?
Full-time CPT, meaning 20 or more hours per week, is allowed but comes with a significant consequence: 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Many F-1 students in business roles structure their CPT as part-time to preserve OPT for post-graduation employment, especially if they plan to pursue H-1B visa sponsorship later.
How do I find Business Development Lead employers that understand CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to search Business Development Lead openings filtered by employers with Labor Condition Application filing history. Those filings indicate prior experience with foreign national employees and work authorization processes, which means your CPT documentation is less likely to stall in HR review or require extra explanation during the offer stage.
What documents does my employer need to keep on file for my CPT?
Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT, but they should retain a copy of your valid I-20 showing CPT authorization, including the authorized employer name, start date, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. The employer name on your I-20 must exactly match the legal entity you're working for, not a parent company or subsidiary.
What happens if my CPT authorization period ends before my Business Development Lead project is complete?
You must stop working the day your authorized CPT end date passes. If the role continues beyond that date, your DSO must issue an updated I-20 with an extended CPT period before you resume work. Extensions require a new employer letter and academic justification, so build in at least two to three weeks before your end date to avoid any gap in authorization.
