Get Access To All JobsClient Advisor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Client Advisor role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your enrolled program. CPT requires the position to be an integral part of your curriculum, so a Client Advisor role typically qualifies for students in finance, business administration, economics, or communications programs. Your DSO evaluates the fit based on your specific program learning objectives and the employer's job description, not just the job title.
Can I do CPT as a Client Advisor at a bank or wealth management firm?
Yes, banks and wealth management firms are common CPT employers for Client Advisor roles. Confirm that the firm is E-Verify enrolled before you accept the offer, since many financial institutions fall under federal contracting requirements. Also verify that the position offers consistent weekly hours your DSO can document in SEVIS, as sporadic scheduling can complicate authorization renewal each semester.
How do I find Client Advisor employers who understand F-1 CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Client Advisor job listings by employers with Labor Condition Application filing history, which signals prior experience working with international employees on work authorization. Focus outreach on firms that have sponsored H-1B or other work visas previously, as their HR teams are more likely to understand CPT onboarding requirements and less likely to rescind offers due to authorization confusion.
Does full-time CPT as a Client Advisor affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT regardless of duration. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, structure your Client Advisor CPT as part-time or limit full-time CPT to fewer than 12 cumulative months across all employers.
What documentation does my employer need from me to start a CPT Client Advisor role?
Your employer needs your I-20 with the CPT authorization page showing their specific company name, your start date, and approved hours. They'll also run an I-9 verification on your first day using the I-20 and your passport or EAD as identity and work-authorization documents. Some firms request a SEVIS confirmation from their HR compliance team before finalizing onboarding, so share your DSO's contact information proactively.
