Get Access To All JobsCommunity Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Community Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Community Manager roles qualify for CPT when they're tied to a curriculum requirement in your enrolled program, typically marketing, communications, digital media, or a related field. The DSO evaluates whether the job duties connect to your coursework. Roles focused on social media strategy, brand engagement, or audience analytics typically satisfy that standard.
Can I do CPT as a Community Manager on a part-time basis?
CPT can be part-time (under 20 hours per week) or full-time (20 or more hours). Part-time CPT doesn't affect your OPT eligibility after graduation. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so if you plan to use OPT post-graduation, track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully with your DSO.
What documents does the employer need to provide for CPT?
Your employer needs to provide a written offer letter specifying your job title, duties, start date, and compensation. Some schools also require the employer to complete a training agreement or internship form. The DSO submits these to SEVP and issues an updated I-20, you can't start work until the new I-20 with CPT authorization is in hand.
Will CPT work experience as a Community Manager count toward H-1B eligibility?
CPT work experience counts as U.S. work experience for H-1B visa specialty occupation purposes. Community Manager roles can qualify as specialty occupations if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. Documenting your CPT duties, projects, and outcomes during the role strengthens a future H-1B petition for the same or similar position.
How do I find Community Manager jobs that accept CPT students?
Browse Community Manager listings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles from employers with a history of hiring international students on CPT and work authorization. When evaluating a posting, look for employers who specify internship or early-career tracks and confirm they're willing to coordinate directly with your DSO before your start date.
