Does Field Support Specialist work qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the work is an integral part of your established curriculum, not just related to your field of study. Roles involving technical troubleshooting, systems deployment, or client-site support typically satisfy this if your program includes coursework in IT, engineering, or operations management. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the job description maps to your specific degree plan.
Can I do CPT for a Field Support Specialist role that requires frequent travel?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer and worksite address listed on your I-20. If the role requires travel to client sites, confirm with your DSO whether the primary employer address covers that work or whether each location triggers a new amendment. Some schools authorize travel within a region under one employer; others require documentation for each site. Get this in writing before your start date.
How do I find Field Support Specialist employers who regularly hire F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you search Field Support Specialist openings filtered by employers with verified visa-filing history, which is the clearest signal that a company understands work authorization paperwork. Beyond the platform, look for employers in IT services, managed services, or field engineering sectors, since these industries have the highest volume of technical roles with structured onboarding processes for international students.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Field Support Specialist role changes scope mid-internship?
If your job duties shift substantially, such as moving from client-facing support to a back-office technical role, your DSO may need to review and re-authorize the CPT. Notify your DSO before the change takes effect, not after. Continuing work under a materially different role without updated authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. Document the change in writing from your employer and bring it to your DSO immediately.
Does part-time CPT for a Field Support Specialist role affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you're considering a full-time Field Support Specialist CPT placement that extends beyond one academic year, discuss the OPT impact with your DSO before accepting the offer, since post-graduation work options differ significantly.
