CPT Service Advisor Jobs
Service Advisor jobs combine customer communication, automotive systems knowledge, and operations coordination, skills directly tied to business, automotive technology, and management programs. CPT authorization requires your DSO to confirm the role integrates with your coursework, so target positions where the job description references diagnosis workflows, service writing, or dealership operations.

Get Access To All JobsService Advisor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Service Advisor role qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT eligibility depends on whether the work is an integral part of your specific curriculum, not on the job title alone. Service Advisor positions tied to automotive technology, business operations, or supply chain management programs typically qualify because the role involves diagnostic communication, inventory coordination, and customer workflow management. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your program's learning outcomes.
Can I work full-time as a Service Advisor on CPT?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to pursue OPT after graduation, limit full-time CPT to under 12 cumulative months. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) does not count toward that limit and preserves your post-graduation work authorization options.
How do I find Service Advisor employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with F-1 work authorization history, which helps you identify dealerships and automotive service companies that have successfully hired international students before. Employers already familiar with CPT documentation are less likely to delay onboarding over I-20 authorization questions or ask you to start before your authorization is issued.
Does a commission-based Service Advisor job affect my CPT authorization?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the employer and role, not the pay structure. Commission-based compensation is common in service advisor positions and doesn't affect authorization eligibility. However, if you later pursue H-1B visa sponsorship, USCIS requires the offered wage to meet the prevailing wage for the role and location, so confirm the base component meets DOL standards using the OFLC Wage Search.
What happens if my Service Advisor job ends before my CPT authorization period closes?
If your employment ends early, you must notify your DSO immediately. Working outside the dates on your I-20 CPT authorization violates your F-1 status. Your DSO will update your SEVIS record to reflect the actual end date. You cannot begin a new CPT position without a separate authorization, so avoid gaps between your authorized period and any new role you accept.
