Creative Director Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a creative director in Minnesota?
Creative director is not a state-licensed profession in Minnesota, so there is no board exam or registration required. Most Minnesota employers expect a bachelor's degree in graphic design, advertising, communications, or a related field, followed by several years building a portfolio across agency or in-house roles. Minneapolis institutions such as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and programs at the University of Minnesota produce candidates competitive for local creative leadership pipelines.
How much do creative directors make in Minnesota?
Creative directors in Minnesota earn a median of about $109,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $70,810 for the lowest 10% to over $177,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire creative directors in Minnesota?
Employers hiring creative directors in Minnesota right now include Taher, Target, and Crown College, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Minnesota's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and large healthcare systems means in-house creative teams are a primary hiring source alongside regional agencies.
Which Minnesota cities have the most creative director jobs?
Blaine, Rochester, and Minnetonka account for the largest share of creative director openings in Minnesota. Minneapolis drives the majority of demand through its density of corporate headquarters, advertising agencies, and retail brands, while Saint Paul's nonprofit and government sectors add steady postings, and Rochester's healthcare economy, anchored by Mayo Clinic, sustains a smaller but consistent market for health-focused creative leadership.
Are there remote creative director jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, and more than many leadership roles, since creative direction increasingly centers on strategic oversight, concepting, and digital review rather than hands-on production. About 67% of creative director openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting broad employer flexibility for senior creative roles. Brand strategy, campaign oversight, and digital creative direction are the functions most consistently offered with location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a creative director in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving into a senior designer or art director role first, then building toward creative leadership over time. Minnesota's agency community in Minneapolis, including firms that serve retail and packaged-goods clients, regularly hires junior and mid-level creatives who can grow into director roles. Large in-house teams at Target and General Mills also post associate creative director positions that bridge experienced individual contributors into people management. A strong portfolio and demonstrated ability to give creative direction, even informally, matter more than a title.
Where can I find and apply to creative director jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to creative director jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current Minnesota openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them. No sign-up is needed to search and review open positions.
