Data Center Technician Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data center technician in Montana?
The most direct path in Montana is completing an associate degree or technical certificate in information technology, networking, or computer systems through a program at Montana State University, the University of Montana, or one of the Montana University System's community colleges such as Highlands College or Great Falls College. Montana does not require a state-issued license for data center technicians, so employers rely heavily on industry certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, or DCCA alongside hands-on experience to assess candidates.
How much do data center technicians make in Montana?
Data center technicians in Montana earn a median of about $48,820 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $34,140 for the lowest 10% to over $62,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data center technicians in Montana?
Employers hiring data center technicians in Montana right now include Benefis Health System, Biolife Plasma Services, and Billings Clinic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. State government agencies and Montana's public university system are among the most consistent sources of data center technician openings given their ongoing infrastructure needs.
Which Montana cities have the most data center technician jobs?
Billings, Helena, and Missoula have the most data center technician openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's largest commercial hub with a concentration of corporate and regional IT infrastructure, while Missoula and Helena see steady demand driven by university networks and state government data operations respectively.
Are there remote data center technician jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of data center technician openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the fundamentally hands-on nature of the role. The portions of the work most likely to be done remotely are monitoring, ticketing, and documentation tasks, while hardware installation and on-site troubleshooting almost always require a physical presence.
How can I get hired as a data center technician in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a helpdesk or IT support role at a Montana state agency, a University of Montana System campus, or a regional managed services provider, where you gain exposure to infrastructure and can move laterally into data center operations. Montana employers regularly hire candidates from Highlands College of Montana Tech and Great Falls College MSU IT programs. Earning a CompTIA A+ certification before applying gives you a measurable edge over candidates without any credential, even if your hands-on experience is limited.
