Technical Support Engineer Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical support engineer in Montana?
Most technical support engineer roles in Montana require at minimum an associate degree in information technology or a related field, though many employers accept equivalent hands-on experience. Montana has no state-issued license specific to this role, so credentials like CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications carry the most weight in hiring decisions. Starting in a helpdesk or IT support specialist role at a Montana employer is the most common path toward a technical support engineer title.
How much do technical support engineers make in Montana?
Technical support engineers in Montana earn a median of about $93,380 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,120 for the lowest 10% to over $160,110 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical support engineers in Montana?
Montana technical support engineer roles are posted by US Department of Veterans Affairs, CVS Health, and Ferguson and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's healthcare networks, telecommunications providers, and public-sector institutions are among the most consistent sources of technical support engineer openings in the state.
Which Montana cities have the most technical support engineer jobs?
Billings, Missoula, and Kalispell lead Montana for technical support engineer openings. Billings anchors the largest concentration due to its healthcare sector and regional corporate offices, while Missoula and Bozeman draw demand from the University of Montana, Montana State University, and a growing technology and startup community that requires enterprise-level support staff.
Are there remote technical support engineer jobs in Montana?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 38% of technical support engineer openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and software-driven nature of much of the work. Roles focused on cloud infrastructure support, SaaS administration, and tier-two software troubleshooting are the most likely to be fully remote.

The most realistic entry point is an IT support specialist or helpdesk technician role at a Montana healthcare system, university, or telecommunications provider, where on-the-job training is common. Institutions like Billings Clinic, Providence Health Montana, and Blackfoot Telecommunications occasionally hire candidates without formal experience if they hold a CompTIA A+ certification or can demonstrate hands-on troubleshooting skills through a home lab or personal projects.
