Data Governance Specialist Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data governance specialist in Maryland?
Most Maryland employers expect a bachelor's degree in information management, data science, computer science, or a related field, followed by experience in data stewardship or analytics. There is no state-issued license for this role, but the Certified Data Management Professional credential from DAMA International is widely recognized by Maryland's federal contractors, health systems, and financial institutions as the professional standard for career advancement.
Which companies hire data governance specialists in Maryland?
Employers hiring data governance specialists in Maryland right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, JBS INTERNATIONAL, and Analytica, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal contractors, large health systems, and financial services firms means demand is steady across both regulated industries and government-facing technology organizations.
Which Maryland cities have the most data governance specialist jobs?
Columbia, Maryland, and Bowie have the most data governance specialist openings in Maryland. The Baltimore and D.C.-suburb corridor dominates because of the region's high density of federal agencies, defense contractors like Leidos and Northrop Grumman, and major health systems headquartered there, while Annapolis draws openings from state government agencies and financial services firms operating in the capital area.
Are there remote data governance specialist jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of data governance specialist openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most of the work involves policy development, metadata documentation, and stakeholder collaboration that transfers well to distributed teams. The portions most likely to remain on-site involve onboarding new data systems or coordinating with compliance and legal teams that require in-person meetings.
How can I get hired as a data governance specialist in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into data governance from a data analyst, database administrator, or compliance analyst role, as Maryland employers routinely consider these lateral moves for junior governance positions. Large health systems like Johns Hopkins Medicine and University of Maryland Medical System run data and analytics rotational programs that expose early-career candidates to governance work. Earning a foundational credential such as the DAMA Certified Data Management Professional associate level or completing a data cataloging tool certification strengthens an application significantly against candidates with equivalent education.
Where can I find and apply to data governance specialist jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to data governance specialist jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings across industries including healthcare, defense contracting, financial services, and state government. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly to the ones that match.
