Data Governance Specialist Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data governance specialist in Virginia?
Most Virginia employers expect a bachelor's degree in information management, computer science, or business analytics as the foundation. Virginia does not issue a state license for this role, but industry credentials carry real weight in the local market: the Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) from DAMA International and the Data Governance and Stewardship Professional (DGSP) designation are both recognized by federal contractors and financial services firms headquartered in Virginia.
Which companies hire data governance specialists in Virginia?
Virginia data governance specialist roles are posted by Booz Allen Hamilton, Capital One, and James Madison University and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Northern Virginia's concentration of federal contractors and the Richmond area's large financial institutions make the state one of the most active hiring markets for this role in the country.
Which Virginia cities have the most data governance specialist jobs?
Richmond, McLean, and Arlington consistently post the highest volume of data governance specialist openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal agencies and defense and intelligence contractors that operate under strict data compliance mandates, while Richmond's large financial services headquarters and state government agencies sustain steady demand in central Virginia.
Are there remote data governance specialist jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 8% of data governance specialist openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves policy documentation, stakeholder collaboration, and platform configuration rather than on-site presence. Policy development, data catalog governance, and stewardship program management are the functions most frequently offered with location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a data governance specialist in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a data analyst or database administrator role at a Virginia employer that already runs a governance program, then transitioning internally once you have documented experience with data quality or metadata work. Federal contractors like SAIC, Northrop Grumman, and Leidos run associate and early-career analyst programs in Virginia that include data management rotations. Earning the CDMP Associate certification and building a portfolio of data dictionary or data quality rule examples gives candidates without formal governance titles a concrete edge in interviews.
Where can I find and apply to data governance specialist jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to data governance specialist jobs in Virginia directly on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings. Search the roles that match your experience and the specialties you want to work in, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
