Data Governance Specialist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data governance specialist in New York?
Most data governance specialists in New York enter the role with a bachelor's degree in information management, data science, computer science, or a related field. New York does not require a state-issued license for this role. Employers in the state consistently favor candidates who hold the Certified Data Management Professional credential from DAMA International, and those with backgrounds in financial compliance or healthcare informatics have a clear advantage given New York's dominant industries.
Which companies hire data governance specialists in New York?
New York data governance specialist roles are posted by Citi, New York Life, and BNY and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New York's concentration of global financial institutions, insurance firms, and major health systems means demand for this role remains consistent across a wide range of large, established employers throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most data governance specialist jobs?
New York, Getzville, and Buffalo lead New York in data governance specialist openings. New York City dominates due to its dense concentration of financial services headquarters, large hospital networks, and media companies, while Albany's government agencies and healthcare organizations and Buffalo's growing financial and insurance sector drive meaningful demand outside the metro.
Are there remote data governance specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. Data governance is a desk-based, analytical discipline that translates well to remote work. About 62% of data governance specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have embraced flexible arrangements for this role. Policy development, metadata management, and data quality analysis are the functions most commonly performed fully remote.
How can I get hired as a data governance specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a lateral move from a data analyst, business analyst, or database administrator role, which gives candidates direct exposure to data quality and stewardship without a formal governance title. Large New York employers such as financial institutions and hospital systems regularly hire junior data stewards or data quality analysts as entry points. Completing the DAMA International associate-level coursework or building a portfolio that documents a governance framework you designed strengthens an application considerably.
Where can I find and apply to data governance specialist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to data governance specialist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
