Design Manager Jobs in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design manager in Indiana?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in graphic design, industrial design, UX, or a closely related field, followed by several years of hands-on design work before moving into a lead or manager role. Indiana does not require a state-issued license for design managers. Large Indiana employers, particularly in manufacturing and life sciences, often look for candidates who have led a design team through a full product cycle, so documenting that experience clearly is the most important credential you can build.
How much do design managers make in Indiana?
Design managers in Indiana earn a median of about $105,690 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,990 for the lowest 10% to over $185,690 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire design managers in Indiana?
Employers hiring design managers in Indiana right now include Lochmueller, Simon Property, and CBRE, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Indiana's mix of global manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and growing tech companies in the Indianapolis corridor keeps demand for design leadership steady across both product and brand disciplines.
Which Indiana cities have the most design manager jobs?
Indianapolis, Gary, and Carmel account for the most design manager openings in Indiana. Indianapolis drives the bulk of postings as the state's corporate and tech center, home to major headquarters and growing digital product teams, while Fort Wayne and South Bend contribute openings tied to manufacturing and industrial design functions at established regional employers.
Are there remote design manager jobs in Indiana?
Yes, and more than many fields, because design management work is largely screen-based and collaborative through digital tools. About 60% of design manager openings tied to Indiana are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader industry flexibility for this role. The portions of the role most likely to stay remote are brand strategy, digital product oversight, and creative direction, while industrial or packaging design roles tend to require more on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a design manager in Indiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to land an individual contributor design role at a large Indiana employer and build toward a lead position from within. Companies such as Eli Lilly, Cummins, and Salesforce's Indianapolis office regularly post associate and mid-level designer roles that develop into management tracks. Lateral moves from UX designer, brand designer, or creative coordinator roles are common stepping stones. A strong portfolio showing ownership of a complete project, even from freelance or academic work, carries significant weight in the absence of formal management experience.
Where can I find and apply to design manager jobs in Indiana?
You can find and apply to design manager jobs in Indiana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Indiana openings updated regularly. Search for roles that match your experience level and the industries you want to work in, then apply directly to the ones that fit. No sign-up is needed to see the listings.
