Tips for Your Developer Advocate Job Search
Show your code and your content
Developer advocate roles expect both. Your resume should link to public repositories, conference talk recordings, or technical blog posts you've authored. Hiring teams treat your actual output as a portfolio, so make every example easy to find and click through.
Tailor your resume to the platform layer
A role at a database company values different depth than one at an AI inference startup. Read the job description for the specific technology layer and reorder your bullets to surface the most relevant API or SDK experience at the top, not buried on page two.
Target companies mid-product launch
Developer advocate headcount often spikes when a company ships a new SDK, opens a public beta, or hosts a major developer conference. Watching release announcements and event schedules lets you apply while the team is actively building community rather than backfilling attrition.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists developer advocate openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a live technical demo for interviews
Most developer advocate interview loops include a presentation or live demo segment. Practice walking through a real project you've built, explaining the decision points as you would to a skeptical developer audience, not a hiring manager who already wants to like you.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate salary
Developer advocate roles vary enormously in how much time goes to content, events, or product feedback. In the offer conversation, get clarity on the ratio before accepting. A title-match with a travel-heavy scope or a support-first mandate can reshape the role entirely.
Developer Advocate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most developer advocates?
The companies hiring the most developer advocates right now include Datadog, NVIDIA, and Okta, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and North Carolina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Cloud infrastructure providers, developer tool companies, and enterprise API platforms consistently post the highest volume of these roles.
How many developer advocate jobs are remote?
About 28% of developer advocate openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible technical roles in the industry. Sub-areas focused on technical content, documentation, and online community tend to offer the most location flexibility, while roles centered on conference presence or enterprise sales support are more likely to require travel or an office base.
How do you become a developer advocate?
Start by building publicly: contribute to open source projects, write technical tutorials, and speak at local meetups or virtual developer events. Get comfortable explaining complex technical concepts to audiences with varying skill levels. Most people who break into developer advocacy come from software engineering or technical writing, so treat those disciplines as your foundation rather than a detour. A visible portfolio of content and community work carries more weight than credentials alone.
Can you get a developer advocate job without much experience?
Yes, especially if you can demonstrate community involvement and technical communication before you apply. Entry-level developer advocate and developer relations associate roles exist specifically for candidates who are early in their careers. Focus on producing a few strong, public-facing examples such as a well-documented GitHub project, a tutorial series, or a recorded talk. Employers in this space weight evidence of genuine developer empathy over years of experience at a known company.
What does the developer advocate interview process look like?
Most processes run three to five rounds. An initial recruiter screen is followed by a hiring manager conversation focused on your technical background and community experience. From there, expect a technical content or demo round where you explain a concept or walk through a project live. Some companies add a take-home writing sample or a mock developer onboarding session. Final rounds typically involve cross-functional stakeholders from product, engineering, or marketing who want to see how you collaborate.
Where can I find and apply to developer advocate jobs?
You can find and apply to developer advocate jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your background and apply directly to each listing. Searching by specific technology stack or seniority level helps narrow the results to positions that are the right fit for where you are in your career.
