INTRODUCTION
Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an innovative and visionary Director of Marketing and Communications to serve as the senior marketing and communication officer for the Division of Student Affairs. The Director will establish a strategic vision that unifies the "One Student Affairs" story into a compelling, data-backed narrative of the Carnegie Mellon student experience while aligning divisional priorities with larger university strategies. Operating under a "Hub and Spoke" operational model, the Director will influence departmental efforts, lead divisional strategies, and serve as an essential liaison to University Communications and Marketing operation (UCM). This role requires a leader who embraces technology, analytics, and advanced storytelling to elevate the divisional profile both inside and outside the university.
Beyond personal execution, the Director will serve as an educator and collaborator tasked with elevating marketing and communication efforts, project management standards, and brand awareness across all individual departments. By establishing a baseline "Digital Toolkit" within teams – including brand template alignment, web editing, and responsible AI literacy – the Director will empower departments to maintain local agility, real-time social media engagement, and localized event promotion. The successful candidate will effectively balance high-level strategic oversight and assessment with intentional capacity-building, providing departmental leaders with the continuous training, editorial frameworks, and creative guidance needed to drive brand consistency.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Strategic Vision & Branding: Define, implement, and assess a comprehensive divisional marketing and communications strategy that unifies the division’s voice and aligns seamlessly with broader university guidelines.
- Project Management & Systems: Oversee high-level divisional and cross-departmental marketing initiatives by creating rigorous work statements, budgets, timelines, and frameworks to maximize quality and output.
- Assessment & Analytics: Evaluate the reach and impact of marketing efforts using high-level data and analytics, proposing actionable strategies to improve communication efficiency, brand consistency, and web UI and accessibility awareness.
- Capacity Building & Training: Empower decentralized staff by developing training programs in strategic storytelling, brand governance, project management, and responsible generative AI literacy.
Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
YOU SHOULD DEMONSTRATE:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills – especially in communicating to internal and external audiences.
- Strong ability to build, optimize, and execute marketing campaigns.
- An “AI Mindset” – using artificial intelligence tools as a human-led work accelerator while modeling responsible, ethical, and risk-aware AI usage.

Tips for Your Director Of Marketing And Communications Job Search
Quantify your integrated campaign results
Directors at this level are expected to show cross-channel impact, not just activity. Pull metrics that tie your communications work to business outcomes: media impressions converted to pipeline, campaign ROI, or earned media value alongside paid spend.
Separate your marketing and PR portfolios
Many hiring panels include both a CMO and a communications lead. Bring two distinct portfolios, one showing brand or demand work and one showing media relations or crisis communications, so each evaluator sees work relevant to their domain.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists director of marketing and communications openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by reporting structure
Whether you report to a CEO, CMO, or board committee changes the scope and autonomy of the role dramatically. Read job descriptions for the reporting line before applying so you're not surprised in the first interview round.
Prepare a 90-day communications audit example
Senior interviewers often ask how you'd assess an organization's current voice and messaging gaps. Walk in with a structured framework you've used before: stakeholder interviews, channel audit, message map review, and a prioritization matrix.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate pay
At director level, the budget you control, the team size you inherit, and whether you own external agency relationships determine your real leverage. Get clarity on those before the offer stage so you're negotiating the full package, not just base.
Director Of Marketing And Communications Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most director of marketing and communicationss?
The companies hiring the most director of marketing and communicationss right now include LawnStarter, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Utah, with the largest share of openings in Illinois, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strongest in healthcare systems, universities, and mid-market technology companies that are building or rebuilding their brand function.
How many director of marketing and communications jobs are remote?
About 24% of director of marketing and communications openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with fully on-site roles more common in higher education and nonprofit sectors where stakeholder visibility matters. Content strategy, digital marketing, and external communications sub-functions within the role tend to carry the highest share of remote or hybrid flexibility.
How do you become a director of marketing and communications?
Most directors reach the role by building deep expertise in either marketing or communications first, then expanding into the other discipline across two or three progressively senior roles. A background in brand management, PR, or content strategy is common. Demonstrating cross-functional leadership, owning an agency or vendor relationship, and showing measurable business impact from campaigns are the steps that typically close the gap from manager to director.
Can you get a director of marketing and communications job without direct director-level experience?
Yes, candidates who have held senior manager or head-of titles with director-level scope, meaning budget ownership, team leadership, and executive stakeholder exposure, regularly make the transition. The strongest applications show a portfolio of strategic work rather than tactical execution, a clear narrative about why the step up is natural, and references from leaders who can speak to your readiness for the accountability that comes with the title.
What does the director of marketing and communications interview process look like?
The process typically runs three to four rounds. An initial screen with HR or a talent partner is followed by a hiring manager conversation focused on strategy and leadership style. A panel interview with cross-functional stakeholders, often including finance, sales, or program leadership, comes next. Many organizations finish with a presentation round where you're asked to respond to a real or hypothetical communications challenge, then present your thinking to senior leaders.
