Match your Australian credentials to U.S. standards
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree in mechanical or electromechanical engineering technology is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 visa purposes. Get a credential evaluation before applying so employers see the equivalency upfront.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to find companies that have already filed Labor Condition Applications for Mechanical Technician or related roles. Prior LCA activity signals an employer already understands the sponsorship process.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsored roles fast
Migrate Mate filters Mechanical Technician jobs by E-3 visa sponsorship eligibility, saving you from applying to employers who won't sponsor. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer.
Address specialty occupation status in your offer letter
Mechanical Technician roles must qualify as a specialty occupation under E-3 rules. Ask your employer to specify in the offer letter that a bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field is required, not just preferred, to avoid consular pushback.
File your LCA before booking your consulate appointment
Your employer must have a certified LCA from the DOL before you can attend your visa interview. The DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven business days, so build that window into your start date timeline.
Prepare for prevailing wage questions at your interview
Consular officers sometimes ask how your offered salary was determined. Knowing that the LCA certifies your wage meets DOL prevailing wage standards for your specific occupation and work location lets you answer confidently without employer briefing notes.
E-3 Visa Mechanical Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Mechanical Technician jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Most job boards don't filter by visa type, so identifying sponsoring employers takes manual research. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this, listing Mechanical Technician roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. You can search by location, industry, and role to narrow down opportunities that match your technical background and visa situation.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Mechanical Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the role is defined. A Mechanical Technician position qualifies as a specialty occupation if the employer requires a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering technology, mechatronics, or a closely related field. Roles that accept any degree or substitute years of experience without a degree requirement are harder to support under E-3 rules and may face scrutiny at the consulate.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Mechanical Technician roles?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens but has significant advantages over the H-1B visa for this role. There's no lottery, no annual cap backlog, and you can apply at any time of year. H-1B selection is random and capped at 85,000 per year, meaning many qualified applicants aren't selected at all. For Australian nationals, the E-3 is the more practical and predictable path.
Can I change employers after entering the U.S. on an E-3 as a Mechanical Technician?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your existing E-3 to the new employer. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL, and you'll need to either apply for a new E-3 visa stamp at an Australian consulate or, if you remain in the U.S., file a change of status with USCIS. You can't start work for the new employer until the new LCA is certified and the visa or status change is approved.
