E-3 Visa Orthopedic Surgeon Jobs
Orthopedic surgeon roles in the U.S. qualify as specialty occupations under E-3 visa rules, meaning Australian-trained surgeons can pursue sponsorship without entering the H-1B lottery. Hospital systems, orthopedic surgery groups, and academic medical centers regularly file Labor Condition Applications to bring on qualified candidates for fellowship-trained subspecialties.

Verify your medical credentials translate correctly
U.S. hospitals require ECFMG certification and completion of an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship. Confirm your Australian surgical training maps to a recognized U.S. subspecialty before targeting roles, since credentialing gaps delay both the offer and the LCA filing.
Target fellowship programs that actively sponsor
Academic medical centers running orthopedic fellowship programs often sponsor E-3 visa surgeons directly into attending roles upon completion. These programs are already familiar with the LCA process and internalize sponsorship costs, making them faster to commit than private group practices.
Search for roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find orthopedic surgeon positions where employers have active E-3 or H-1B sponsorship history. Filtering by sponsorship intent saves time and surfaces hospital systems already set up to file an LCA through the DOL.
Address your 457 or specialist registration upfront
U.S. employers unfamiliar with Australian credentials often confuse AHPRA specialist registration with general medical licensing. Clarify during the interview that your Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is equivalent to U.S. board certification, and provide documentation early.
Get your state medical license before the offer closes
Most hospital systems require an active or pending state medical license before signing an employment contract. Start the application immediately after your first interview, since some states take three to six months to process international medical graduates.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA and visa paperwork
Once you have a signed offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA submission to the DOL and prepare your DS-160 and consulate documents. Orthopedic roles involve detailed specialty occupation evidence that the service is built to compile.
E-3 Visa Orthopedic Surgeon: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find orthopedic surgeon jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search for orthopedic surgeon roles where employers have a demonstrated history of E-3 or H-1B sponsorship. Hospital networks, academic medical centers, and large orthopedic surgery groups are the most active sponsors. Filtering by sponsorship history narrows your list to employers who already understand the LCA process and won't need to be educated on the E-3 from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does orthopedic surgery qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes. Orthopedic surgery requires a specific, advanced degree in medicine with specialized surgical training, which meets the USCIS definition of a specialty occupation. Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying that the role requires at least a bachelor's level equivalent in a specific field, and surgical subspecialties satisfy that threshold straightforwardly.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for orthopedic surgeons?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been fully used, so there's no lottery and no registration gamble. The H-1B requires a lottery entry each March with roughly a 25 percent selection rate. For Australian surgeons, the E-3 is the faster, more predictable path. Both require an LCA and employer sponsorship, but the E-3 can be issued at the consulate without waiting for USCIS to approve a petition.
Can I start work on an E-3 while my state medical license is still pending?
No. U.S. hospitals will not bring you on as a practicing orthopedic surgeon without an active state medical license, regardless of E-3 status. Your employment start date in the LCA must reflect when you're legally authorized to practice in that state. Some hospitals will issue a conditional offer and hold the LCA filing until licensure is confirmed, so start the licensing process as early as possible.
