Verify your AHPRA credentials transfer correctly
U.S. hospitals require ECFMG certification and state medical licensure before filing your LCA. Start the ECFMG process early since credential verification for Australian MBBS graduates typically runs three to six months.
Target academic medical centers and trauma hospitals
Level I and Level II trauma centers run residency programs and maintain dedicated immigration teams familiar with E-3 visa filings. These employers process specialty physician visas routinely and won't need educating on the E-3 requirements.
Search for E-3 sponsorship roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters emergency medicine positions by employers with active E-3 sponsorship history. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you receive an offer.
Clarify your J-1 waiver status before applying
If you completed a U.S. residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, you may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement that blocks E-3 status until fulfilled or waived. Confirm your J-1 history before targeting employers.
Ask employers about their LCA timeline at offer stage
Your employer must obtain a certified LCA from DOL before you can apply at the consulate. Request a start-date buffer of at least three to four weeks to account for DOL certification and consulate appointment scheduling.
Understand state medical license timing relative to your visa
Many states won't issue a full medical license until you have a confirmed work authorization start date, creating a circular dependency. Some hospitals accept a temporary or training license for the initial E-3 filing to break the deadlock.
E-3 Visa Physician - Emergency Medicine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Physician - Emergency Medicine jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. You can filter emergency medicine positions by employers who have filed E-3 or LCA applications for physician roles, so you're targeting hiring managers who already understand the visa process rather than starting from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for emergency medicine physicians?
The H-1B visa requires surviving an annual lottery with roughly a 25 to 30 percent selection rate, while the E-3 has a 10,500-slot annual allocation that has never been fully used, meaning you can apply any time a job offer exists. For emergency medicine, where hospital demand is consistent year-round, the E-3's predictability makes workforce planning far more straightforward for both you and your employer.
Does emergency medicine qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3?
Yes. Emergency medicine requires a medical degree and, in most states, board certification or eligibility through ABEM or AOBEM. The role meets the E-3 specialty occupation definition because a specific academic and clinical credential is an industry-standard requirement, not just a preference listed in the job posting.
Can I switch employers while on an E-3 as an emergency medicine physician?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp or a change of status before you can legally begin working for them. Unlike H-1B portability rules, E-3 status doesn't carry over automatically, so plan for a two to four week gap between offer acceptance and your authorized start date.
