Frame your degree equivalency upfront
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 visa specialty occupation purposes. Document this clearly in your application materials before engaging employers to avoid delays later.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to identify companies that have previously certified LCAs for Solutions Engineer or related technical roles. Prior filings signal that the employer's HR and legal teams already understand the E-3 process.
Clarify the job title maps to specialty occupation
Principal Solutions Engineer roles that blend sales and technical delivery can raise specialty occupation questions if the job description emphasises client relationship management over engineering. Make sure your offer letter and the LCA job description emphasise the technical degree requirement.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA and paperwork
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This avoids the coordination delays that often occur when employers assume their standard H-1B counsel can handle E-3 filings without adjustment.
Negotiate who bears the DOL filing timeline
The LCA must be certified by the DOL before your consulate appointment can be scheduled. Build this into your start date conversation with the employer so neither side is surprised by a two-to-four-week certification window before you can book your interview.
Prepare a technical credentials package before interviewing
Compile your degree transcripts, a credential evaluation if requested, and a role-specific resume that maps your engineering experience to the specialty occupation definition. Having this ready shortens the gap between offer and E-3 filing initiation.
E-3 Visa Principal Solutions Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Principal Solutions Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface U.S. employers willing to sponsor Australian nationals on the E-3 visa, including Principal Solutions Engineer roles. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type or track LCA filing history, so you can spend weeks applying to roles where sponsorship was never an option. Migrate Mate narrows the field to employers who have demonstrated willingness to sponsor.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Principal Solutions Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3 purposes?
Yes, provided the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as computer science, electrical engineering, or information systems. Roles that are structured more as senior account management with light technical involvement can face scrutiny. The job description and LCA filing both need to clearly establish the degree requirement to satisfy the specialty occupation standard.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Principal Solutions Engineer roles?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so there's no random selection risk that can block you from starting a role even after an offer is accepted. H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed once per year in April, and selection is not guaranteed. For Australian nationals, the E-3 allows you to move on a timeline that works for you and your employer, rather than waiting for a lottery result.
Can I change employers while working on an E-3 as a Principal Solutions Engineer?
Yes, but you need to restart the E-3 process from the beginning with the new employer. That means a new LCA filed and certified by the DOL, a new visa application, and in most cases a new consulate appointment if your current visa stamp is tied to the previous employer. You can travel on your existing E-3 entry until your status expires, but you should not start work for the new employer until the new LCA is certified and your documentation is in order.
