Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
Production Lead roles must meet the DOL's specialty occupation standard, meaning your degree field needs to align directly with the position. An engineering or operations management degree carries more weight than a general business qualification when the employer files the LCA.
Target manufacturers with existing LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Certification Data Center to find employers who have filed LCAs for production and operations roles. Companies already familiar with the LCA process move faster and are less likely to stall over paperwork concerns.
Address the specialty occupation question early
Some employers assume Production Lead roles don't qualify because they involve floor-level supervision. Come to interviews prepared to explain how your degree applies to process optimization, quality systems, or lean manufacturing, which grounds the role in specialty occupation territory.
Get your Australian credentials assessed before applying
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree, but having a formal equivalency statement from a credential evaluation service speeds up the LCA process and reduces back-and-forth with the employer's HR team.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA and paperwork
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle the LCA submission, visa application, and consulate preparation. This is the stage where self-managed applications most often stall, especially for production roles where specialty occupation justification needs clear documentation.
Negotiate the E-3 prevailing wage requirement upfront
The DOL requires your offered salary to meet the prevailing wage for the role and location before the LCA can be certified. Confirm with your employer that the offer meets this threshold before signing anything, so the filing isn't rejected after the process has started.
E-3 Visa Production Lead: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Production Lead jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for Production Lead roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up applying broadly and hitting dead ends. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where sponsorship is already on the table, saving you from chasing employers who don't know what an E-3 is.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Production Lead role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the role is structured. A Production Lead that requires applying engineering principles, quality management systems, or lean manufacturing methodology, and for which the employer normally requires a relevant bachelor's degree, can qualify. Roles that are primarily supervisory without a degree requirement are harder to support. The key is documenting that a specific field of study is a baseline requirement, not just a preference.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Production Lead roles?
The E-3 is a significantly better path for Australian nationals in this field. There's no annual lottery, no random selection process, and the 10,500 annual allocation has never been fully used. The H-1B visa requires winning a lottery slot before any petition can be filed, which means qualified candidates are routinely shut out for a full year. With the E-3, if the role qualifies and the LCA clears, you can proceed directly to your consulate appointment.
Can I switch employers while on an E-3 as a Production Lead?
Yes, but you need a new LCA and visa for each employer change. The E-3 is employer-specific, so your current status doesn't transfer. Your new employer files a fresh LCA with the DOL, and once it's certified, you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp, which typically means a consulate appointment in Australia or at a third-country post. You can work for the new employer once the new visa is issued.
