A candidate shall be expected to demonstrate successful experience pertinent to the position they are being recommended and have demonstrated qualities relevant to the goals of the academic unit in which they will be employed.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is creating an environment that affirms community across all dimensions. If an accommodation due to a disability is needed to apply for this position, please call 352-392-2477 or the Florida Relay System at 800-955-8771 (TDD) or visit Accessibility at UF.
Duties and Responsibilities
This is a 12-month, tenure-accruing position that is 60% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 40% Extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) located at the Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC), Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), University of Florida based in Apopka. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Entomology and Nematology Department. The incumbent is expected to have access to funds from the Florida Pest Management Association (FPMA) Professorship endowment to support their Extension and research programs.
The UF/IFAS Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC) in Apopka, Florida serves as a hub for research, teaching, and Extension programs supporting Florida’s ornamental, landscape, urban and controlled environment agriculture industries. This variety of faculty, staff and programs provides a unique setting for interdisciplinary work within the MREC campus, with colleagues on the main UF campus and with faculty at other Centers around the state.
The UF/IFAS Turfgrass program, considered one of the best nationwide, is an integrated research, teaching, and Extension group of faculty in three departments and four locations (main campus and three Research and Education Centers). These faculty serve a large and dynamic turfgrass industry composed of lawn care professionals, sod producers, sports field managers, and golf course superintendents.
Expected Duties
The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized, and extramurally funded, research and Extension program in urban landscape entomology, with emphasis on turfgrass and ornamental landscapes. Research themes should address insect pest biology, ecology, and integrated management strategies tailored to Florida systems across urban and suburban landscapes, including, residential and commercial landscapes, athletic fields, sod production, and golf courses. Collaboration with colleagues across Florida, the southern region, and nationally and internationally is expected.
The program will emphasize sustainable pest management approaches that reduce reliance on pesticide inputs, improve plant health, and enhance environmental quality in urban landscapes. Efforts will also address pest dynamics associated with urbanization and changing environmental conditions.
This position addresses a critical statewide need driven by rapid population growth and urban expansion. It will support Florida’s turfgrass, ornamental plant, and pest management industries by providing science-based solutions that enhance economic sustainability, environmental stewardship, and quality of life.
The incumbent will develop a comprehensive Extension program that provides statewide leadership in urban landscape entomology through UF/IFAS Extension. Extension programming must align with the needs of stakeholders, including the development and delivery of educational programs, workshops, and decision-support tools for sod producers, pest management professionals, landscape managers, arborists, golf course superintendents, county faculty, and the general public. The faculty member will contribute to relevant UF/IFAS Initiative Teams focused on agriculture, horticulture, and sustainable urban systems.
The faculty member is expected to publish research and Extension results in national and international refereed and non-refereed journals, present results at professional meetings, and collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty and industry partners to address emerging pest management challenges.
The successful candidate will participate actively in graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing research results with students, and engage in professional service, consistent with the IFAS land-grant mission. The faculty member will actively seek contract and grant funding to support his/her program. Involvement in national and international professional societies is expected.
Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
Background Information
The position will be based at the UF/IFAS Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC) in Apopka, Florida, which serves as a hub for research, teaching, and Extension programs supporting Florida’s ornamental, landscape, urban and controlled environment agriculture industries. The Center provides access to laboratory, greenhouse, and field research facilities, along with strong partnerships with industry stakeholders. MREC is one of 12 University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Research and Education Centers. Located in the heart of Florida (just north of Orlando), the MREC is a center for research, teaching, and Extension programs. Originally established as the Central Florida Research & Education Center in the fall of 1986 by administratively combining research centers at Apopka, Leesburg, and Sanford, a new research and education facility was constructed on land next to the old Apopka center in 1999. Today, UF/IFAS MREC serves a large ornamental, nursery and agricultural industry which has historically cooperated with the Center to develop applied research. MREC’s unique 218-acre facility includes two controlled environment facilities, over 130,000 square feet of greenhouses, 20,000 square feet of laboratories, two instructional pest management facilities, and a graduate student dormitory.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Professor of Rhetoric
Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. committees
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes, but hiring committees vary. Request a credential evaluation letter from your institution to include with your application materials.
Target universities with active H-1B filing histories
Universities that regularly file H-1B petitions already have international faculty infrastructure and legal staff familiar with specialty occupation standards. These departments are far more likely to extend an E-3 offer without internal resistance to the sponsorship process.
Frame your specialisation around DOL occupation codes
The DOL uses SOC codes to assess specialty occupation status. Rhetoric and composition faculty most commonly fall under SOC 25-1123 (English Language and Literature Teachers). Confirm with your prospective employer that the LCA filed with DOL reflects this code accurately.
Address the LCA timeline before negotiating a start date
Your employer must file and receive a certified LCA from DOL before you can attend your consulate appointment. DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven working days. Build this into your start date negotiation so the timeline doesn't catch the department off guard.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to coordinate paperwork
Rhetoric faculty offers often come from departments unfamiliar with visa mechanics. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the LCA filing, visa paperwork, and consulate preparation end-to-end, so neither you nor your employer has to figure it out from scratch.
Clarify nonimmigrant intent requirements with your department
The E-3 is a nonimmigrant visa, meaning you must maintain intent to return to Australia. If your department expects you to apply for permanent residency, discuss the implications early. Pursuing a green card while on E-3 status requires careful handling of dual intent.

Find Professor of Rhetoric JobsProfessor of Rhetoric E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Professor of Rhetoric jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It surfaces U.S. university and college positions where employers have demonstrated willingness to sponsor international faculty on work visas. Searching specifically for rhetoric, composition, and communication faculty roles filters results to departments most likely to support an E-3 application for Australian candidates.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Professor of Rhetoric role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes. Postsecondary teaching positions in rhetoric, composition, or communication studies require at minimum a master's degree and typically a doctorate in a directly related field. This degree requirement satisfies the E-3 specialty occupation standard. The DOL's LCA certification process will confirm the role meets prevailing wage requirements for the position level and location.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for university faculty roles?
For Australian nationals, the E-3 is a significantly more practical option. There is no annual lottery, no cap to exhaust, and no registration fee. H-1B selection is random and capped at 85,000 per year, meaning even a strong application may not result in a visa. E-3 petitions are filed directly with USCIS or processed at the consulate without any lottery exposure.
Can I switch from a visiting appointment to a tenure-track role on E-3 status?
Yes, but a new LCA and visa application are required for each distinct employer and position. If you move from a one-year visiting role to a tenure-track appointment, even at the same institution, the employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need to attend another consulate appointment or file a change of status with USCIS before the new role begins.
