Align your credentials to U.S. specialty occupation standards
Your Australian bachelor's degree in engineering or construction management satisfies the E-3 visa degree requirement, but your employer's job description must explicitly require that degree field. Review the DOL's O*NET classification for Project Controls Manager before accepting any offer.
Target capital-intensive industries with established E-3 pipelines
Construction, oil and gas, utilities, and large-scale infrastructure firms file LCAs regularly for project controls roles. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data to identify which employers have filed for this job title in your target city.
Request LCA filing before your start date is set
The LCA must be certified by the DOL before your consulate appointment. Push your hiring contact to initiate the LCA as soon as your offer letter is signed, not after onboarding paperwork begins, to avoid delays at the consulate.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage LCA and visa paperwork
Project controls roles often involve multi-site or split-employer arrangements that complicate standard LCA filings. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles the LCA, DS-160, and consulate preparation end-to-end so nothing slips between your employer's HR team and the consulate.
Prepare documentation showing schedule and cost control authority
Consular officers assess whether your role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Bring a position description, org chart, and examples of earned value reports or project budgets you've managed to demonstrate the analytical complexity of the role.
Confirm your employer's prevailing wage compliance upfront
The DOL requires your offered salary to meet the prevailing wage for your job title and work location. Ask HR which wage level they've selected on the LCA before you accept, since wage level disputes can delay certification or require refiling.
E-3 Visa Project Controls Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Project Controls Manager jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Most job postings don't explicitly advertise E-3 sponsorship because employers often conflate it with H-1B visa. Migrate Mate filters roles by employers with active LCA and E-3 filing history, so you're targeting companies that have already navigated the process for Australian professionals rather than educating HR from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Project Controls Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the employer's job description requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a quantitative field. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required can be problematic. If the position involves EVM, schedule analysis, or cost forecasting at a professional level, the specialty occupation standard is typically met.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Project Controls Manager roles?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual cap that has never been fully used, meaning there's no lottery and no April filing window to miss. The H-1B requires registration in March and a random selection process. For Australian project controls professionals with a firm job offer, the E-3 allows a consulate appointment and start date on a predictable timeline that the H-1B lottery can't offer.
Can I switch employers or projects on an E-3 as a Project Controls Manager?
You can change employers, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp if you travel internationally before the change takes effect. For project-based roles where you move between contracts, confirm whether the LCA covers the actual worksite location, since project controls work is often performed at client sites rather than the employer's registered address.
