Frame your credentials for U.S. employers
Australian cost management qualifications are highly transferable, but U.S. hiring managers may not recognise AIQS membership or RICS accreditation. Translate your credentials into U.S. equivalents and explicitly tie your degree field to the specialty occupation definition DOL uses for E-3 visa LCA approvals.
Target sectors with active LCA filings
Focus your search on construction, engineering consultancies, and infrastructure developers. These sectors file LCAs regularly for cost management roles and already understand the E-3 process, which shortens the time between offer and visa approval significantly.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Many Project Cost Manager roles that qualify for E-3 sponsorship are never labelled as such in job listings. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with active E-3 and LCA filing history in construction and project management, so you're targeting companies already set up to sponsor.
Address prevailing wage early in negotiations
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Request a written offer before your interview stage concludes so your employer has time to submit the LCA to DOL, which typically takes seven business days.
Clarify your degree equivalency before applying
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted for E-3 purposes, but if your degree is in a field adjacent to cost management, such as civil engineering or quantity surveying, get a credential evaluation done before your consulate appointment to pre-empt officer questions.
Streamline filing with a dedicated E-3 service
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork. This is especially important for Project Cost Manager roles where the specialty occupation documentation needs to clearly link your degree field to cost control functions.
E-3 Visa Project Cost Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Project Cost Manager jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search. Most job listings for Project Cost Manager roles don't specify E-3 sponsorship, even when the employer is set up to file. Migrate Mate filters by employers with verified LCA and E-3 filing history in construction and project management, so you're not wasting applications on companies that have never sponsored an Australian before.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Project Cost Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, in most cases. The E-3 requires the role to normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Project Cost Manager positions typically require degrees in quantity surveying, construction management, civil engineering, or a related field. The key is that the job description must reflect a degree requirement, not just a preference, and your own degree must align with that field.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian Project Cost Managers?
The E-3 is significantly more practical for this role. There's no annual lottery, no cap anxiety, and your employer can file anytime a qualifying offer exists. The H-1B visa is capped at 85,000 per year and subject to a random lottery, meaning a qualified candidate can be rejected simply by chance. For construction and infrastructure roles where project timelines are fixed, the E-3's predictability is a major advantage.
Can I switch employers while working as a Project Cost Manager on an E-3?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp to re-enter the U.S. if you travel internationally after the job change. If you stay in the U.S. throughout the transition, you can begin work once the new LCA is certified and your status reflects the new employer. Build transition time into your planning, particularly around project handover commitments.
