Verify your credentials meet U.S. licensure requirements
Australian psychology degrees are generally recognized, but U.S. states require separate licensure. Check whether your graduate degree meets your target state's board requirements before applying, as licensure status directly affects whether a role qualifies as a specialty occupation.
Target employers with psychology licensing infrastructure
Hospital systems, university counseling centers, and federally funded community mental health centers regularly sponsor E-3 visa holders because they have HR teams familiar with the process. Smaller private practices rarely have the administrative capacity to manage LCA filings.
Frame your Australian training in U.S. specialty occupation terms
Your offer letter and job description must establish that the role requires a specific graduate degree in psychology, not just any bachelor's degree. Work with your employer to ensure the DOL-facing description reflects clinical scope and licensure requirements explicitly.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA and consulate prep
The LCA must be DOL-certified before your visa interview, and psychology roles sometimes require additional documentation linking your Australian qualifications to U.S. specialty occupation standards. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment.
Address the dual-intent question before your interview
The E-3 is a nonimmigrant visa, so consular officers assess whether you intend to return to Australia. Having a clear explanation of your professional plans and ties to Australia reduces the risk of a 221(g) administrative hold on your application.
Confirm your employer is prepared to file a new LCA each renewal
E-3 renewals require a fresh LCA certification every two years, which means your employer must re-engage with DOL each cycle. Raise this expectation during offer negotiations so your sponsoring employer understands the ongoing administrative commitment before you accept.
E-3 Visa Psychologist: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Psychologist jobs in the U.S. that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Psychologist roles from employers with active E-3 sponsorship history. Because the E-3 isn't as widely advertised as H-1B visa sponsorship, filtering by employers who have filed LCAs for psychology positions significantly narrows the search to realistic opportunities rather than listings that may not support visa holders.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Psychologist role qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the position requires a specific graduate degree in psychology or a directly related field. Roles requiring a master's or doctoral degree in clinical, counseling, educational, or neuropsychology are well-established specialty occupations. Generalist roles where any bachelor's degree would suffice are more likely to face scrutiny during DOL review.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Australian psychologists?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens and has no lottery, no annual cap backlog, and no registration fee. H-1B selection is random and the wait for an available slot can be years. For Australian psychologists, the E-3 is the faster and more predictable path, assuming the role meets specialty occupation requirements under both visa categories.
Can I switch psychology employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but each employer change requires a new LCA certified by DOL and a new E-3 visa issued at a consulate or, in some cases, a change of status filing with USCIS. You cannot begin work for a new employer until that process is complete, so build transition timelines accordingly and avoid gaps in authorized employment status.
