Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Research Assistant Professor
Translate your CV into a U.S. resume
U.S. hiring committees expect a two-page resume, not a full academic CV. Condense your research output to three or four flagship publications and lead with your dissertation focus and grant history to signal specialty occupation fit immediately.
Target R1 universities with active research funding
Departments with active NSF or NIH grants hire Research Assistant Professors far more frequently than teaching-focused institutions. Search DOL's FLAG portal for Labor Condition Applications filed under your research discipline to identify departments that have sponsored E-3 workers before.
Ask about LCA timing before accepting an offer
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your visa application can proceed. Confirm your prospective department has submitted the LCA and ask for the certified copy before you book your consulate appointment, as certification typically takes seven business days.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your paperwork
Research Assistant Professor sponsorship involves an LCA, a prevailing wage determination, and consulate preparation. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so your start date isn't delayed by administrative errors.
Clarify your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
USCIS requires that a Research Assistant Professor position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. If your offer letter describes duties broadly, ask HR to revise it to reference your discipline explicitly, as vague language can create problems at the consulate.
Time your application around the academic hiring cycle
Most U.S. university departments finalize Research Assistant Professor offers between February and April for positions starting in August. Submitting your E-3 application in May or June aligns with consulate availability in Sydney and Melbourne before the semester begins.

Find Research Assistant Professor JobsResearch Assistant Professor E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Research Assistant Professor jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for Research Assistant Professor positions where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Beyond that, university departmental websites and academic job boards in your field post positions that specify visa support. When you apply, confirm with HR that the department has sponsored E-3 workers previously, since not all research-focused universities have gone through the LCA process before.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Research Assistant Professor role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, in virtually all cases. A Research Assistant Professor position requires a specific doctoral or master's-level background in a defined field, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard. The key is that your offer letter must describe duties tied to your discipline. Generic language like 'research and related duties' can create complications at the consulate, so request that HR ties the role description to your specific area of expertise.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Research Assistant Professor roles?
The E-3 is significantly more practical for Australian academics. There is no annual lottery, no cap that restricts the number of applications, and you can apply directly at a U.S. consulate in Australia rather than waiting for USCIS to approve a petition. H-1B requires a lottery selection before any petition can be filed, meaning many qualified applicants never get a slot. For a role tied to a specific research start date or grant cycle, the E-3's predictable timeline is a meaningful advantage.
Can I change universities or research departments after arriving on an E-3?
Yes, but your E-3 status is tied to a specific employer. If you move to a new university or department, your new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp at a consulate before or after the transition, depending on your situation. Short gaps between positions can affect your status, so coordinate the timing with both institutions and confirm the new LCA is certified before your last day at the original position.
