E-3 Visa Professor Jobs
Professor roles at U.S. universities qualify as E-3 specialty occupations, making Australian academics strong candidates for visa sponsorship without lottery risk. Universities routinely file Labor Condition Applications for faculty hires, and your Australian doctorate carries full equivalency under E-3 degree requirements. Two-year terms renew indefinitely alongside your appointment.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Professor
Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. committees
U.S. hiring committees assess teaching experience in credit hours, not contact hours. Convert your Australian load explicitly in your CV and cover letter so committees don't have to guess whether your background meets their specialty occupation threshold.
Target R1 and R2 research universities first
Doctoral-granting institutions file LCAs routinely as part of faculty onboarding. Their HR offices already know the E-3 process, which shortens offer-to-filing timelines compared to liberal arts colleges or community colleges encountering E-3 sponsorship for the first time.
Request LCA filing immediately after receiving an offer letter
Your E-3 clock doesn't start until the DOL certifies the Labor Condition Application. Ask HR to initiate filing the same week your offer is signed, not after contract paperwork clears, so your consulate appointment timeline stays on track.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA and consulate prep
Faculty offers often come with tight start-date expectations tied to semester schedules. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages LCA submission, visa paperwork, and consulate appointment preparation end-to-end so you don't miss your first teaching term.
Document teaching equivalency if your doctorate is from Australia
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees and research doctorates are accepted under E-3 specialty occupation rules, but consular officers occasionally ask for a credential evaluation. Having a formal equivalency letter ready at your interview prevents unnecessary administrative delays.
Clarify E-3 status before accepting a visiting versus tenure-track offer
E-3 visas are tied to a specific employer and role. A visiting appointment at one institution doesn't automatically transfer if you move to a tenure-track position elsewhere. Each new appointment requires a fresh LCA and a new visa application or change of status filing.

Find Professor JobsProfessor E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Professor jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Professor roles where employers have active E-3 or LCA filing history. Most U.S. universities sponsor international faculty as a standard part of hiring, but filtering specifically for institutions with documented sponsorship activity saves time during a competitive academic job cycle.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Professor role qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3?
Yes. Professor positions require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific academic discipline, which meets the E-3 specialty occupation definition. Roles in research, teaching, or both qualify. The degree must align with the field you'll be teaching or researching, so a chemistry professor needs credentials in a relevant science, not a general arts degree.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Professor positions?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, meaning Australian academics can apply at any point in the year and receive a decision at their consulate interview. The H-1B requires lottery selection, and cap-exempt H-1B positions at nonprofits or universities still involve longer USCIS processing times. For faculty roles, the E-3 is faster and more predictable from offer to start date.
Can I hold an E-3 visa across multiple academic appointments or adjunct roles?
The E-3 is employer-specific, so each appointment requires its own LCA and visa authorization. Teaching across two institutions simultaneously requires separate filings for each employer. Adjunct arrangements are possible but each institution must independently certify prevailing wage compliance with the DOL before you can begin work under that appointment.
