Engineering Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering in Montana?
Becoming a licensed engineer in Montana requires earning an accredited bachelor's degree in engineering, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulating qualifying work experience under a licensed Professional Engineer, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. The Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors oversees licensure and registration. Many roles in civil, environmental, and structural engineering require this PE license before you can practice independently or stamp drawings.
Which companies hire engineerings in Montana?
Montana engineering roles are posted by CVS Health, Quanta Infrastructure Solutions, and Providence and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's energy, transportation infrastructure, and natural resource industries drive a large share of ongoing engineering demand across the state.
Which Montana cities have the most engineering jobs?
Montana, Kalispell, and Yellowstone County account for the largest share of engineering openings in Montana. Billings leads because of its concentration in energy, refining, and regional corporate headquarters, while Missoula and Great Falls support engineering work through state agencies, utilities, and infrastructure contractors serving western and north-central Montana.
Are there remote engineering jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 48% of engineering openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on, field-intensive nature of most engineering roles in the state. Design, review, and project management functions within civil or software engineering are the sub-areas most likely to offer hybrid or remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a engineering in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for engineer-in-training or junior engineer roles with the Montana Department of Transportation, NorthWestern Energy, or regional civil engineering firms that routinely hire new graduates. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early signals readiness and gives you an edge over candidates who have not yet sat for it. Internship or co-op experience with a Montana employer, even one semester, significantly improves your chances by demonstrating familiarity with local project conditions and regulatory requirements.
Where can I find and apply to engineering jobs in Montana?
