Entry level TN visa roles are available to Canadian and Mexican professionals in USMCA-designated occupations without a lottery, a cap, or a sponsorship wait. Your employer files no petition with USCIS, you qualify at the port of entry with a job offer letter and credential proof, making entry level hiring faster than most U.S. work visa categories.

Verify your occupation qualifies before applying
USMCA lists exactly 63 TN-eligible occupations with specific credential requirements. Pull your job title's O*NET profile and cross-check it against the USMCA appendix before sending a single application, so you're not targeting roles that won't qualify.
Frame your degree equivalency upfront
Canadian three-year bachelor's degrees and Mexican licenciatura degrees are accepted, but some hiring managers assume only U.S. four-year degrees qualify. State your credential type and its equivalency in your cover letter to remove that objection before the offer stage.
Search employers with active TN filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter for companies with verified TN sponsorship history in your occupation category. That filing record tells you the employer has done this before and won't back out when HR discovers the paperwork.
Request a detailed offer letter before your port entry
CBP officers approve or deny TN status on the spot based on your letter. It must state your USMCA job category, your specific duties, the start date, and that the role is temporary. A vague letter is the most common reason for same-day denials.
Use OFLC Wage Search to negotiate from the right baseline
TN status doesn't require prevailing wage compliance the way H-1B visa does, but underpaying relative to DOL wage levels can trigger scrutiny at renewal. Pull the Level I wage for your occupation and metro area from the OFLC Wage Search before discussing compensation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do entry level TN roles require employer petition filings with USCIS?
No. TN status is approved at the U.S. port of entry or a U.S. consulate, not through a USCIS petition. Your employer provides a job offer letter and you present it alongside your credentials to a CBP officer. There's no I-129 filing, no processing wait, and no government fee the employer pays to USCIS before you start.
Which entry level occupations appear most often in TN hiring?
Engineering, computer systems analysis, scientific research, accounting, and management consulting roles generate the most TN certifications at the entry level. Each occupation on the USMCA list carries its own credential requirement, so your degree field needs to align with the specific job category, not just the industry. Check your job title against the USMCA appendix before applying.
How do I find employers who have actually sponsored TN visas before?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified TN sponsorship history, so you can focus on companies that have completed the process rather than employers who say they're open to it but have never done it. Entry level candidates lose weeks to employers who underestimate the offer-letter requirements, so sponsorship history is a practical filter, not just a preference.
Can I start a TN job while my application is pending?
If you're applying at a land port of entry or a Canadian preclearance facility, CBP can approve you the same day, so there's no pending period. If you're applying at a U.S. consulate in Mexico, you can't start until your TN stamp is issued. You can't begin work based on a receipt notice the way you can under some other visa categories.
What happens to my TN status if my entry level role changes scope?
TN status is tied to the specific occupation category and employer named in your original approval. A promotion or role shift that moves you into a different USMCA occupation category requires a new TN approval before you take on those duties. A duties change within the same category generally doesn't require a new filing, but your employer should document the change in your personnel file.
